So...the constraints of having a young family mean that the 1h drive to the Peaks (my nearest mountain biking, being based in the East Midlands) means that I haven't touched my mountain bike for a couple of years and have instead been out for short blasts on the roads and local bridleways on the gravel bike.
I had been intending to keep the mountain bike, if only because it's worthless (26er hardtail). But, it seems even old stuff is selling for ridiculous prices at the moment, so I'm tempted to get rid.
Has anyone else gone completely mountain bike free and not regretted it?
No a mountain bike is for life not just Christmas 🙂

Rather cut my arm off! So errr no...

I get your logic... Might be a worthwhile move momentarily, then in 3-6 months when everyone starts dumping their unused COVID purchases cheap on the internet, you may pickup a nice new modern bike for near enough what you sold your old 26" HT for possibly...

I can assure you that whilst they might not be mountains, there's Mountain Biking to be done in the East Midlands...
I'd say definitely move anything with older tech on now (unless it has sentimental value!), whilst people are clamouring for it, then pick up something newer when the weather turns and people lose interest..
Depends where you are, how long for, what your constraints are and what the riding's like.
I spent 3 months in Finland in a little one room apartment, took my Singular Peregrine and a couple of sets of tyres. Commuted on/off road, raced cx (on mtb trails) big gravel rides, road rides, bike packing. It was ace.
If I moved there full time, I'd get a mtb pretty quickly, though!
Read your post again. Get rid while the prices are as good as they're probably ever going to be for your bike, buy something to suit when you're in a position to. Things change, you might move house, jobs, different bikes might make more sense depending on where you are when you've got more time.
When the other way. MTB only. Not regretted it so far, HTH 🙂
More seriously, if you're not riding it I'd get it sold. You'll probably sell it at the moment, probably not once things get back more towards normal. Nothing to stop you buying another MTB later.
Right now is one of the few times I’d say “sell sell sell!”
If you haven't used it for 2 years you may as well have been MTBless. I didn't have an MTB for 5 years but last spring fancied a change so got one. Got bored of it after 2 months and went back to fixed gear and ride the same (very easy) terrain I used the MTB for. The MTB was faster in places (especially downhill) but I don't miss the weight, unnecessary suspension and gears.
In your position I'd sell. If you've not used it in 2 years and are keeping your gravel bike you're unlikely to miss it.
You can always buy another more modern bike at a later date if you do miss it.
I’d sell it, but make sure the OH knows it’s an interim thing just so that when things change you’re already cleared for the replacement.
Then you get the fun of new bike shopping when things have changed again in the future.
Although I’m liking the sound of the sell it now and buy a “Covid impulse buy” bike later plan. Maybe do that.
Thanks, folks. You've convinced me to have a crack at selling it. Goodness knows how to price it!
I sold my 26” MTB about 12 months ago and then brought a new MTb about 6 months ago. Wasn’t using the bike in the meantime so made sense.
Price it probably a fair bit uigher than you think it’s worth, prices are mental just now.

Me.
I fell out of love with it, mainly due to the faff. I don’t like driving to ride my bike, and it’s 40 mins in the roads to get to any trails. It felt like the time doing it wasn’t worth the time getting ready or cleaning up.
Ive been debating a gravel bike, I suspect I would have bought one has my job not been interrupted with Covid.
Personally, I don’t regret selling up at all. I still ride loads on the road and running trails is almost as good as cycling them.
In your shoes, not riding your bike for 2 years, I’d sell without hesitation.
