Hi, I'm looking at some lyrics (coil u-turn) to replace my 2009 32 Talas RLs. I was looking at the new 36 talas but the prices are making my eyes water and they now only have 2 positions. So, has anyone gone from recent Talas to u-turn? Any regrets? Little bit porkier I know but I'm a grinder and won't be winning any races any time soon anyway!
Thanks for any advice.
I have revs and floats (I think). I prefer talas but it's the 3 height version. Not much in it to be honest, It wouldn't make me pay more but I prefer the Talas as it's simpler to use as it requires less turns. My U-turns knock which is annoying, apparently it's fine but unnavoidable.
Thanks jonb, I'm thinking I may need to look for some 2010 36 talas after all. Seen some good deals for lyriks though!
backhander, i don't think mojo have anymore 2010 forks left, they certainly had no floats.
oh noes! mibbe I'll have to go for the lyriks instead.
I've fitted a U-tURN coil to an old 36 TALAS chassis and it works really well. Had a bit of a faff with the sealing on the uturn shaft through a vanilla topcap, but once I got the spacing right it worked perfectly.
I've now got a 5 and 5AM at the turn of a dial with coil plushness.
I very rarely use the middle setting on my talas so the 2 position settings is not a concern but I don't like the decrease in the overall range of travel reduction. 140-100 is just so spot on.
had talas it broke now i have u-turn.
I've used both but to be honest the only time I've lowered / reduced the travel was for getting into the gondala cars.
On the trail I've set them at full travel and just left it.
Of the two I prefer the U-turn as it lets you change things in 3mm increments, iirc, instead of 30mm at a time. I also prefer it because of it's simplicity and minimal maintenance - compared to the Talas system.
I've never owned a TALAS fork but ridden a few. To me, they only work at their best at full length, the shorter settings are useful but they seem like "You're climbing so you don't need the fork to work as well as usual". Also, not compared exact like for like but they didn't seem as good as a fixed-length model. But far easier to change length of course.
U-turn is IMO the better option if you actually want a fork that works at its best at the different lengths- it's not so good if you just want "climbing length" but it's ideal if you just want variable fork length. Which is what I do, with my Hemlock and Soul, they both ride well with a shorter fork, it's not just a climbing setting, and the u-turn complements that.
