I'm just curious to know if anyone here has ever ridden any distance (5 miles ish) with a flat tyre on a rimpact or similar tyre insert? Did it kill the tyre? Was it pedalable? Did the tyre come off the rim? What was it like?
Yup on a cush core. Wasn't too bad, seemed fine after (both tyre and insert).
Yeah. Half way down towards Sadgill from Brockstones in The Lakes. Rode back to Ings with only a hoop of Backer Rod in the tyre.
It rode surprisingly well tbh and I wouldn't say I pussy footed around.
Both tyre and insert survived, although the tyre needed a couple of mushrooms to plug the original holes
Rode the bottom of the mega on a flat front tyre with an insert. There were quite a lot of little random bits of foam in my tyre when I took it off, but, it died heroically.
Did a few miles on tarmac with a rear flat on a Rimpact. Needed quite a bit of sealant to get the creased looking tyre to reseal but it’s been fine since. Was on my Levo and had to back off the power because of the disturbing squirming but otherwise ok.
did about 5 miles on tarmac back to the van with a flat rear. the tyre was worn out anyway so i changed it after but i have also done about a mile off road mwith a flat and used the tyre again after plugging the hole.
Yeah, 3 ish miles on a flat rear, with rimpact. Fine at slow speed riding home, re-used tyre and rimpact afterwards.
About 5km off-road (slowly and carefully) on a rear flat with a Huck Norris in there a few years back. Tyre and insert stayed in situ and serviceable for many rides after that too.
Rob Wardell did KLL fire road descent, as part of his record breaking WHW effort, on a cushcore.
Yup about 3km of rocky downhill trail (carefully) on a Vittoria Airliner after a sidewall damage right above the rim that wouldnt seal.
Liner and tyre were fine and are still in use after I repaired the sidewall at home.
Ridden quite a few times with a flat tyre. On the road it is okay but on gravel it ended up roughing up my rim which I had to sand to get back to smooth so not advisable!
I'm thinking a pair of rimpact inserts weigh about the same as a spare inner tube at around 250 grams, so for winter riding in the slop and dark when I really don't want to be messing about fitting an inner tube, it kinda makes more sense for me to run lightweight casing tyres and inserts.
My only concerns being the tyre getting damaged by being ridden flat and the effort required to ride it home. Oh and maybe wheel damage too...
I did about 1k on my rear rimpact. I know roughly where the puncture occurred but didn't realise it was a complete (and probably instant) deflation till the end of the ride and I found the hole. I was pleasantly surprised how well the insert worked. Felt like riding on a soft tyre rather than a flat. I'm tempted to not take a spare tube on rides now and instead carry a mushroom patch and small sealant bottle.
