I know the subject question sounds like an oxymoron but the Swedes have been busy putting together an airbag hood for your head. Worn as a collar like so:

£400 odd and no idea whether it's re-usable. Not suitable for mountain biking apparently and some of the questions from the FAQ are quality:

I usually cycle with my dog attached. Will Hövding work if I fall off then?
Yes.

I usually ride on my friend's handlebars. Will Hövding work if I fall off?
Hövding would probably work if you fell off the handlebars but we only guarantee that it will inflate when you are cycling yourself.

There's also a funny bit about different haircuts and hats that might stop it working properly.

That aside, interesting idea...

Inside Hövding there is a black box. The box records 10 seconds of data on the bicyclist's movement patterns during (and just before) a cycling accident. This data is interesting and valuable to us in our ongoing development work. We would be grateful if you could send in your Hövding to us if you are involved in a bicycling accident. We will examine the black box and recycle the product. To say thank you for your help, we'll give you a discount on a new Hövding in return.

So not reusable it would seem. Do you think you coud set it off by picking up a dropped wallet in the cafe?

400$ single use... I know cyclings an expensive hobby but this is getting ridiculous!

If wearing a helmet was a big problem for cyclists then it would have some potential apart from the hefty price tag and single use nonsense and lack of potential mtb use and the fact it looks like it would cook your neck...

So essentially what we have here is no solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Brilliant.

And the advantage over a regular helmet is.....

Eeeer.....

It looks like a snood and makes your neck sweaty. And that is always going to be worth the extra money.

But best of all after a little bump you can ride around looking like the..

What's the issue with is being single use? That's no different to a normal helmet (unless you don't replace your helmet if it gets hit in a crash?)

I'm assuming it will 'go off' when you crash. I would hope so. I've had many crashes but so far not one of them has resulted in an impact to my helmet/head.

You mean I've got to do my nails, hair and make-up after I crash? No way.

That dress doesn't look like it comes in my size either.

No issue as such - whilst £400 is a price worth paying if it saves your brain but it's going to sting the pocket a shed load more than replacing a sub-£100 'normal' helmet...

Good point 🙂

Isn't there evidence that it provides better protection than a helmet does in terms of decelerating the head (IIRC from one of "those" helmet threads)

Not going to do much in a face or forehead first impact...

Come on guys, we all know wearing a helmet will kill you. Or something like that. Where's TJ when you need him....

Been done on here before. Looks a good idea. removes most of the drawbacks of helmets, should offer significantly more protection. Air bags for two wheelers are still very much in the early stages of development. Back / neck protectors would be good as well.

This sort of idea will prove its worth in the future I think as the tech improves

One would hope the price would come down, I suppose the sensors are different to car ones, and must measure speed/acceleration and orientation?

not much use for me. most of my helmet writeoffs have been hitting trees or overhanging branches.

The one's in alpinestars etc leathers apparently used data from 100s/1000s of crashes so they can identify what happens in a crash (presumably they have a big jolt before you go through a long period of zero-gravity whilst you fly through the air i.e. a sensor would read zero as your acceleration is balanced by gravity).

Some Troy Lee D3 lids are £340, just to put it into perspective.
