Hi,
Thinking about doing this in September in a group of 3-4. Looking for advice on number of days but was thinking of 4 in total. I am trying to work out where to stop and it is not obvious.
Day 1 FW-Laggan doesn't look to bad apart form Corryeriack climb
Day 2 Laggan-Braemar
Day 3 Braemar-Far side of Mount Keen
Day 4 Far side of Mount Keen - Montrose
Anyone done this and can give some advice. Taking the route form Wild Trails book.
Yup,did that route in 3 days .
I enjoyed ,but it would have been more fun ( and a lot quicker)on a CX .
Wow - very interested in this too.
FH - why so with the CX? I presume there are long, long sections of forest/estate tracks?
Fasthaggis, did you stop at Laggan and Braemar only. I would have thought the Laggan to Braemar section would be 'challenging' on a CX bike especially if the weather had been a bit damp.
There is quite a lot on the Wild Trails route (plus road work)Gavin and it's not very technical.
There are far better C2C routes from FW to Montrose that include some good single track, but a friend wanted to do it,so we did.
OP
Yeah,Laggan (Pottery bunk house) and Braemar (YHA)
If Feshie is 'damp' it will be harder ,but I didn't see anything that would bother a CX .
Oh ,and travel as light as you can,Mount Keen with lot's of luggage is no fun, nicer if you can ride most of it.
Fasthaggis - do you have any info on alternatives from Fort William. Ideally we would be using train to get to start and finish from Glasgow and then Edinburgh.
Try searching on here ( but use google as STW search is a bit pants).
Here's one that McMoonter did C2C
I would suggest having a look at something else, it takes you through some great scenery but the riding is not that much fun. The cairngorm loop Blair athol - rothiemurchus - brae mar has great riding done in about 2.5 days or maybe start in crainlarich take west highland way to fort William then head over corriack to Cairngorms for a longer trip. Both easily done using trains.
I know it sounds daft but I fancy doing a C2C. FW to Montrose sounds good as you don't need to leave a car on the other side of the country.
Did a circuit of the Cairngorms previously which was fun but similar to
C2C 95% could easily have been done on a CX bike.
McMooter's trip is pretty similar apart from a more interesting 1st day and going down Glen Tilt rather than Glen Feshie. Struggling to work out the route form Corran using the description.
How about Fort William, up Glen Nevis and through to Loch Treig.
Round by Loch Ossian and Corrour station, onwards to Loch Rannoch.
Cut off into Tummel forest and then into the back of Blair Atholl.
Glen Tilt through to Braemar, turn right into Glen Callater, over Jocks Road into Glen Clova and then final 30 miles or so on road to Montrose.
Just check the conditions on Jocks Road, should be fine in September but I was shin deep in frozen snow up there about 3 weeks ago.
