[Closed] Anyone do a Fox 34 FIT4 damper service themselves?

Changing the oil and seals in the lower on Fox forks is straightforward enough and changing all of the O-rings in the dampers on Rockshox is also super easy.  However servicing the FIT4 dampers on Fox forks looks like another level of hassle altogether.  Does anyone do this at home or it is just one of those jobs that you send your forks away for?

(I don't actually think they need doing but was just curious when I was changing the oil)

I do them at work, but I have the Fox tools. If you look through the service instructions you can see if its something you have the tools to do/want to do. The instructions are pretty good

You can find the service procedure here

thanks for that.  I've been through the instructions and I there are only a couple of tools I would need.  The clamp could just be manufactured and the bullet tool I guess I need to buy but again maybe it can be improvised.

I was just wondering if anyone bothered to do it at home or just paid (or maybe even just never bothered 🙂 )

Changing the oil and seals in the lower on Fox forks

that's what I do as well. Makes the forks feel so wonderful plush...!

FIT4, big service:

(or maybe even just never bothered 🙂 )

I don't touch this stuff. No need - as long as the forks work so good. In the group I'am biking: all kind of new (FIT4 and GRIP) and older Fox forks. And some very old forks which are still going strong and newer saw the "big service".

Depends, if the damper is not working, or makes squelchy noises it needs serviced.

If you want to minimize work I would just do lowers as that is what gets dirt in and also makes a huge difference to the feel of the fork (dry v clean and lubed wipers).

TF Tuned dont replace the damper seals in a full Fox Fork service unless required so they dont think it is necessary, they do strip, clean and inspect.

Thats interesting, thanks. It looks like nobody really bothers themselves but also that it probably isn't necessary most of the time.  On rockshox it's easy so clean and change o-rings but they never look that worn anyway, even on second hand ones where the stansions are heavily marked

Sorry one thing I did forget, fully stripping allows you clean and grease the adjusters (dentent ball and spring)

I have had to replace corroded detent balls and springs in rebound and compression adjusters, when I spoke to somebody at Mojo they said they strip their personal forks and thickly grease the adjusters when they are brand new to prevent corrosion as they are sometimes only lightly greased from the factory.

@bigyan - thanks, that might be a good excuse to try it depending on what I have to do to bodge the tools

I'll be doing mine soon as they have the "seized knob due to to rusty balls problem" that bigyan mentions.
