I'm in the process of building up (or rebuilding) a Canyon Spectral for my lad to move onto and I've hit a snag. The original cranks fitted are 170mm and that's longer even than I run on any of my bikes, so the one bit of new kit I've bought for it (other than linkage bearings) is a new set of short cranks from Trailcraft in the states.

Frustratingly when I've come to fit them I've realised that the SRAM BB is a weird 24/22.2mm ID hybrid and the straight 24mm axle cranks won't fit. I don't want to have to go to the expense if replacing the whole BB (bearings are fine) so has anyone had a similar experience and fitted a 24mm ID beaing on the NDS? If so what spec and from where?

Cheers

G

Sounds like a SRAM GXP bottom bracket - not weird, just not the Shimano standard it sounds like your crank is (and not BB30). You might be able to swap the bearing to match the other side but would need a suitably sized dust cap also.

Is the bottom bracket press-fit or threaded? If the latter, you can pick up a Deore one for about £15 which will do the job.

Once you’d worked out what the existing BB is (maybe PF92 Gxp?) I think frogstomp is right, just buy the appropriate BB and save yourself a load of grief. You don’t have to spend a fortune.

Thanks guys - research suggests it is simply a SRAM GXP as the cups are flat and plain with no drive indents. The Shimano BB looks like a good shout, it's as cheap as a single bearing - thanks.

As ever this things costing me more than I bargained for.

This sounds like it is a press-fit bottom bracket (rather than threaded - GXP come in both styles) so you will need to knock out the old cups and press in new ones. This will probably be PF/BB92 - which are a bit pricier than the threaded ones.

What year Spectral is it? Canyon probably have a bike archive on their website where you can confirm what is fitted. If you are happy to take the crank arm off it may be printed on the outer edge of the BB too.

Turns out the BB is a nice Wheels Mfg BB86/92 and has no external markings which is why I couldn't ID it without knocking it out. Thankfully it came out pretty easy and it does seem like a very nice bit of kit. It does then seem a shame to replace it with a cheap plastic shelled BB. Decisions, decisions . . .

Result! You can buy the dust shields separately (I think that's them - check the Wheels Manufacturing website) and just source a bearing using the code on the other one.

I think I had a similar problem when I tried to fit a 24mm Rotor crank in a Wheels manufacturing BB. When I looked closely at the BB bearings the non drive side had a barely noticeable spacer/ reducer in it. I knocked that out and the crank fitted.

Now I'm torn between buying a new cheap BB and getting the SRAM cranks it has shortened then selling the Trailcraft cranks while they're brand new. Would save me the best part of £200!

What's wrong with 170 cranks? How old is the kid?

170s are longer than the cranks I've been riding for the last 10 years. I'd have gone shorter if they were available and don't want to saddle him with longer than me. He's 8" shorter than me and whilst he's still growing rapidly, I'd like to keep him onthe shorter side. I'd happily run the 155 Hopes given the budget and would like him on something comparably sized.

I doubt it's a deal breaker ither way tbh as I was on 175s at his age as that's all that was available at the time.
