Looking for advice on a potential gearing change...Now, I currently run 105 5800 semi compact with 11-28 rear. I've a ride lined up soon with some serious climbs. I'm hoping I can get away with bunging a 32 t rear cass'. I know the max is supposedly 28 on the short mech but has anybody risked it (taking care not to cross-line and I will be fitting a new chain)

cheers

Maybe not relevant but it didn't quite work on mine with 105 10-speed, it was close enough that some people'd have just tolerated it but not quite there.

I'm running a short cage 6800 Ultegra rear mech with 11-32 (11spd) cassette, 50/34 chainset.

I added a couple of links to the chain (for those occasional naughty big/big combos) and screwed the B tension in to clear.

When it does go bib/big its a bit noisier but otherwise no problems with shifting.

HTH

It all depends on the bike, as they all have different derailleur hanger lengths

Trek and cervelos generally work, Specialized generally less successful

unfortunately the only way is to try it, but quite expensive if it doesn’t work!

FWIW, neither my 5700 nor my 5600 short cages played nicely with a 30t cassette (10sp), let alone a 32. Hangers vary, though, so YMMV. My workaround was to buy a Sora, which worked perfectly happily and was also quite cheap.

As said above, some will, some won’t.  If you try it you’re halfway there cost wise anyway, if it doesn’t work, just drop a long cage mech on (and chain links obvs.) and you’re sorted.

Buy a longer b-screw?

32 is fine for me on a 105 cannondale, run that for a few years. 34 seems the limit before you need to get special der hangers, that will work but needs some b-screw bodgery otherwise the upper jockey wheel is right on the sprocket and is really noisy.

Similar Question,

I've got a 6700 (10 speed) Ultegra Rear mech, currently using 12-30t with 50/38 (on Standard 130 BCD) cranks.
I was getting on OK with that, but being a bit fat and lazy over winter I really felt the hills on my ride over the weekend.

Does anyone know if Will the 6700 mech stretch to a 32t?
I don't really fancy looking for a whole new compact chainset, a slightly bigger cassette would be the easier option TBH...

And if so does anyone do a 12-32, 10 speed cassette?
I don't need an 11t sprocket on this bike....

I went Medium Utegra on my tripster, just to be safe. It looked like the short would work but I wasn't 100% happy offroad it'd survive.

Can't say I notice any disadvantage other than paying for it 3 years back.
