Hello everybody

Would very much appreciate some input on my Yeti SB66’s linkage?

I bought the bike 2nd hand for a very decent price and took it to my LBS for a tune up.

The eagle eyed tech spotted my Switch Pivot looked dodgy, we did some googling and yes he was right.

Can’t add images here but the pivot position has moved counter-clockwise permanently from 1.30 to 10.30 if that makes any kind of sense!

He stripped and re-built so it looked correct, finished some other jobs and then let me know ready to collect.

I picked it up and had wheeled it almost back to the car and thought ‘Hey, I’ll ride the last 10m!’…

Turns out no air in the shock so it hyper-compresses, clunks and pushes the switch/pivot into the wrong position again (didn’t realise until home).

The shop apologised and said they’d forgot to put some air back in the shock (busy readying for lockdown!).

But should this have really made a difference? Is the pivot knackered or would the lack of air cause it?

And can I just ride the thing anyway with the pivot in the wrong place? I guess not…

Thanks in advance anyone!

Is there a bolt in the bottom of the frame behind the BB? Item 5 in the assembly section of the owners manual (p22)?

I think that's what stops the switch link going over centre, hence the rubber bung on the end of it.

Ahhh...that would make sense.

So it sounds like it’s potential missing something internally that controls the return point as it were.

Issue not caused by over compression as such LBS should (maybe) have know a bit was maybe missing?

Thanks chap, that sort of makes sense...

Aye, what he said, needs the wee bolt and the rubber jonny over it.

Great bike btw, still best descender I've ever had, just amazing on big Rocky bastard descents. 😊

It's an external bolt, visible underneath and to the rear of the bottom bracket, angled up towards the switch link. Give it a quick check if the bike is to hand.

One of these: https://www.silverfish-uk.com/products/SPARES/Frames/YC300030234_Yeti-Switch-link-Bump-Bolt-dick

With one of these on the end: https://www.silverfish-uk.com/products/SPARES/Frames/YC300030235_Yeti-Switch-link-Bump-Stop

Ps, it's a brilliant bike. Get this sorted and you'll discover its a total ripper.

Excellent, cheers all. Really appreciated.

There is a bolt on the underside but haven’t checked if it has the rubber bump stop.

Is it ok to just unscrew it to check?

Does it impact anything else?

Bad news I’m guessing is it’ll need another strip down to get the pivot back in the right place?

No, it should rotate if you take the shock off and work the linkage.

The rubber johnny is about the size of a Shraeder valve cap, which can be used as a substitute for a short while. The caps are usually destroyed & don't come out in one piece.
Great bike, my V2 Banshee Spitfire was nearly as good, but certainly not better than my SB66. Had to go to a V3 Rune to surpass it.

Again thanks for all the input team!

So I can start by whipping that bolt out from under the bb?

Is that just the bolt for the rubber bit?

Just checked and the bolt was only screwed in about a third!

Mystery explained.

Now to explore shock removal, uncharted territory for me...

Just undo one end; it should allow the suspension to move without resistance and pull the switch back over-centre.

Good luck!

So near...removed shock at linkage and could just get it to move to the correct orientation BUT the drive side swing arm fouled on the frame ever so slightly meaning I think I need to undo where the swing are connects to the pivot the just manually actuate the pivot to the right position..?

Any order to undoing the swing are bolts?

Success boys!

Most work I’ve ever done on a rear linkage but relatively painless.

Did pinch bolts first then pivot axle but not sure it matters.

Now to get out on it!

Thanks again for all the inputs and advice.

That stopper bolt clearly hadn’t been properly in place for years.

I think it was slightly threaded so previous owner must have thought it was in when it wasn’t.

Probably been ridden with the pivot in the wrong position for ages...

Superb, it's a relatively simple design, but definitely needs to have regular maintenance. Keep on top of it, especially those big switch bearings, get more grease into them.

Cheers, there is a tiny bit of play somewhere but it rides lovely.

It could be psychosomatic but now the Switch is working it feels a little extra plush than my orange 5.

Will have to back to back them at some point somehow...
