Wondered if the are any opinions on the above. I am looking to add to my fleet hopefully early in the new year luckily helped by my employers ride to work scheme.
I have seen a number of reports go on about it having the same front end as their 29ner with a head tube spacer. I wondered whether that might make it hard getting a new headset (I guess the hope headset mix and match could be used). I fancy getting one of these and adding a pike fork..or just keeping it all standard... It seems to have good kit for the cash its still 2.5k but compare to a number of other bikes out there seems quite well kitted out, and I like the Specialized warranty.
The Enduro comes with a Pike and is a decent pedaller and superb technical climber.
Thanks that might be an option too. I noticed the Enduro seems quite similar to the Stumpjumper and a bit cheaper too. If it climbs ok I will take a look. Would be nice to have the pikes on the front..
Your stuck with the headset if it's the same as the carbon ones they have a set of cups bonded in.
hmm don't like the idea of that. Im going for the alloy version. Hopefully press fit.
Did you not read any of the reviews? It's a pile of crap..
The 29 version is one of the best all-round bikes on the market. Forget about wheelsize BS, buy the bike with the right geo.
I love mine! Rides nice, climbs nice just feels right
Check the reviews out, but try and get a ride on one, it's personal preference really!
I like my stumpy, it's perfect for what I want!!
There is no cups on the carbon version. The bearings sit directly into the frame.
Thanks for feedback . I think it might be the Enduro as the Pike fork is swaying me. I don't want a 29er as I'm too short for the big wheels..

Remind me to tell that to all the short people I know riding 29r's...
Hi Mike. Might be fine for them but simple arithmetic for me.
With an inside leg of 29inches a wheel of 29ins doesn't make sense.
It might for stuck in the saddle riders who don't need to move round the bike much, but I'm afraid i move around quite a bit and like the extra clearance.

I test rode the 650B and 29er versions back to back before buying the 29er. I found the 650B a compromise, the bottom bracket was too low and the head angle too steep for the smaller wheels. The 20mm plug in the headtube shouldn't mean any headset headaches, as the Stumpy uses a Campy style headset that simply sits in place and doesn't require a press. It's probably the most user friendly headset system out there.
I get what you're saying about the inside leg and the preference for a bike you can swing your weight around on. The 29er has a tall front end, which put me off initially and I wouldn't want it any taller (I'm a smidge under six feet tall). However, before you part with any money I'd strongly urge you to test ride both versions back to back and make up your own mind from there.
If you do settle on the 650B then there are better 650B bikes out there, like the Enduro for starters.
Radioman i used to think the same as i have a similar inside leg measurement . Test rode a 29er enduro and it was bloody superb, changed my thoughts on 29ers and ended up buying a 29er rockhopper . I have a 26" enduro which i would recommend highly and the 650b or 29 are supposed to be even better . A riding buddy has a 26" stumpy evo which i've tried a few times and really liked it as it does feel quicker but prefer the fun factor of the enduro . I would say 650b enduro or the 29 stumpy , go have a test ride 😉
Well MBR weren't all that keen on the 650b stumpy and as they like Specialized almost as much as JCL it must be shit!
as pitcherpro mentioned, definitely try the 29'er first before 'writing it off' based on leg measurements
I am 5'10" with 32" inseam
I find my medium (17.5") Specialized 29'er is a great fitting bike.
I would not say the 650 is sh*t but it just didn't feel right, and Specialized is one of those brands (whatever people say about other aspects of their business) that generally have the geometry very dialled
I'm riding the expert 650b in the hyper green and coming from an Enduro29 which was amazing it took some getting used too.
It's weighs not a fat lot with it being 28lbs with Trail King 2.4 and 2.2 tyres with Pedals. It climbs like a Hardtail and still goes down pretty good too. With the headangle being steeper you have to use your weight much more in corners rather than just ploughing into them like you could do on an Enduro.
What you have to remember is that the stumpy is made for going uphill and downhill whereas the enduro is more gravity based so will/should be better going downhill.
I noticed the 650b stumpy in a sale somewhere the other day reduced from £2500 to £1700!!
I'm sure it was freeborn bikes but could be wrong, they back at full money now.
Obviously a sign of things to come as I reckon there not a big seller.
I have the 29er carbon version in an xl, good bike but spesh make the head tubes far to long on the bigger sizes making the front end way to high. What's wrong with sticking with 120mm ish and letting people put a spacer under the stem !!!!!
I have a 29er stumpy and it lives up to the hype. and I have a 29" inside leg. I ride a medium and its fantastic with 150mm pikes.
That Stumpjumper does indeed look wrong.
Can't put my finger on it?....too short in the reach?....forks look to be coming down at an alarmingly steep angle?....it's definitely candidate for ugliest bike around at the moment.
Well it is basically the 29er with smaller wheels, the 29er isn't the greatest looking bike in anything smaller than a large anyway as it looks out of proportion in my opinion.
FWIW the reach is pretty good, I like a long toptube and the front end is definitely in the all too rare "just right" zone. I've ridden plenty of full suss bikes much shorter in the top tube despite them being in a size large. The head angle works on a 29er but I can't see it working too well on a smaller wheeled bike, it's steeper than my 2011 Camber for certain.
Cheers guys i think i will have to do some test rides when i get back to home. i won't write the 29 off either just on my lack of height. like Esher Shore and others have above i would certainly have considered a 29 for a hardtail, but I'm a bit reluctant for a full suss 29. i already have a lovely on-one ti 26in hardtail that i do most of my riding on.
When i tried the 29 enduro it didn't feel that much different fit wise to my 26 version , even though my mate said it looked "odd" .
