Any OPEN UP Owners?

Just seen some frames heavily discounted to £1549 and was quite tempted as a do-it-all kind of bike. Would probably want it for a bit of CX, gravel and road riding.

I've got most of the kit I'd need to build it up and could potentially get rid of two other bikes if they're any good so freeing up some space in the garage.

Are they any good? Any issues with them?

I’ve got an Open UPPER - it’s my main road bike, but I can go away with it with spare wheels and tyres and it’s a very useful gravel bike.

One thing to consider is that it has no guard or rack mounts.  Another is that a Carbonda CFR 696 has similar geometry, many more mount options, is around a 1/3rd the (discounted) price and is only 40og heavier.

I have both.

I have an UP with both road wheels and 650b gravel wheels.  Really pleased with my decision although if I had multi-day rides in mind I would likely have chosen something more capable for carrying a load.  Only issue has been some paint chips around the drop outs but that is due to the fact I still haven’t found the foolproof way of swapping wheels with a GRX rear mech.

Handling is definitely "non-twitchy road" rather than "performance MTB" and ride shows its Cervelo roots - stiff BB but pliant ride.  Large = 56cm.

I was dithering about bidding for one on ebay last week and...it sold.
Should have jumped in.

i've got an UPPER in Med. Fantastic road-oriented bike.

I'm just buying another wheelset - Zipp 353NSW as a pure road set.

It's great.

Yes it doesnt have mudguard mounts. I have an old Boardman CX with 'guards permanently on, for bad weather days.

Interesting to hear about the Carbonda frames, I’ll have to look in to those.
I did consider a Space Chicken/Free Ranger but it appears that Planet X don’t do discounted frames any longer and they’re pretty expensive now.

@djflexure Let me know how much you want for it, I might be interested.
I’ll have to double check sizes first though as I think a medium may be a bit on the small side.

I've got a large Carbonda frame and fork that I've still not got round to building up and could be tempted to part with.

Are these the same as the on one free ranger?

https://www.planetx.co.uk/products/on-one-free-ranger-frameset-1

They look similar with the dropped drive side chain stay

@scruffythefirst

If you decide to part with it, drop me a PM as I’d be interested.

Similar geometry, but not the same, no.  The material and layup is different, the seatstay bridge is VERY different, as is the fork and many other things.  I’d say it’s around 80% of the way there for around 30% of the price.  It’s good enough that I’m not reaching for the UPPER to commute on at every slightly sunny opportunity.
