I'm in Newcastle for a course for 6 weeks and was thinking of taking the mountain bike. What's the local riding like and are there any clubs I could tag along with since I don't know the area.
Cheers

Loads nearby.

Chopwell, Hamsterley, Kielder, all of Northumberland including Hexham/Haltwhistle. 7Stanes aren't that far away either.

Aye. Chopwell is a small local Forest. Canny for a couple of hours blast. Otherwise you need to head up to Northumberland or the trail centres at Kielder and Hamsterly. The 7Stanes aren't far away either.

Check the video link below and also my a YouTube channel for some more ideas:-

Also worth looking at www.midaircrisis.co.uk depending on where you are.

Thursday night rides for us and Sunday day rides.

Local stuff for night rides isn't that exciting but has good banter. The stuff listed above is good though.

Go to Hamsterley as it is quite good - probably better than Kielder unless you want a really long ride. Chopwell you need to know, same for Thrunton but there will be people riding up that way.

Might be worth asking on here each week see what people are up to. Personally I'm doing the Bellingham blast this weekend, 3 pks the week after then I think it is CX racing proper.

I'm the membership secretary and committee member so i will probably respond to any mails.

Everyone is welcome and cater as much as possible to everyones riding ability. Local Trails on a Sunday 10am and Wednesday night 1900 meet at the Shepard and Shepherdess next to the entrance to Beamish Museum. Longer rides on a Sunday also, plus much more

We have been going for appx 22yrs and have a good cross section of riders (80 members or so)

The site hopefully gives a flavour of who we are and what we are about, any questions just drop a line or give me a call

Would suggest thrunton but you would need someone to show you the trails. There are numerous riders about you could tag along with them drop me a mail if you fancy a jaunt to Northumberland there are a few different places to go also around rothbury and simonside. YouTube thrunton to give you a taste of what it's like.

I've never been to Thrunton. Might get the train to Alnmouth and have a ride up.

I'm in Hexham. 🙂

Regular wednesday night ride goes 8pm from top of Back Street. Usually finishes at The Globe for a pint or 2.

If you fancy heading up this way, feel free to give us a shout. The guys from the bike shop (the bikeshop hexham on facebook) usually go out sunday morning.

Interesting thread as I am vaguely considering a move to Newcastle where my sister currently is. Are southern mountain bikers tolerated up there? 😀

lol, I have been checking out the area in google, meant to dig out OS maps as well, spotted chopwell etc, Thrunton and that area sound good, I hadnt spotted them

I found a website about chopwell mentioning some issues with walkers, is that just normal level or particulary bad there? page here

Can you ride through Dipton Wood and Slaley Forest just south of hexham?

Northumberland here but hardly riding of late, NE Northumberland right near the coast.

Southerners are allowed yes as long as they're not too loud or gobby.

As above. Chopwell is quite handy for a blast, Hamsterley a bit further but good especially in naff weather. Northumberland and Durham are easily accessible

Some of the pics above are rides on hexhamshire common ~(nearly brought a tear to my eye, been ages since I lived up that way) and the surrounds near Allendale, the BW's up there are numerous and if youre haltwhistle then check out stuff towards Alston. It can be bleak and wild but personally I quite like that. These trails arent marked as in trail centres but a good OS map will throw up good options.Sounds like the hexham guys could show you stuff on the east side of that.

Chopwell is a short blast and worth a ride out along the old railway line, past the metrocentre and out. It can be a good half day ride from newcastle if you explore further than the short marked routes in chopwell. Walkers are the same as anywhere, be polite and say hi. The Beamish guys can show you the stuff past chopwell and around the northumberland/durham borders i reckon.

Thrunton and Simonside are worth a trip but as others have said it would help to get a local to show you where the best stuff is, thrunton is better than simonside IMO.

Kielder and Hamsterley are good but quite long drives from newcastle. Hamsterley has fab stuff and some of it is marked up. Kielder is somewhere I havent ridden in ages so somebody else can say whats marked up these days.

Enjoy. Northumberland riding is some of the best especially out in the wilds... and for true wilds theres the cheviots, ace.

Top Pic is Bolts Law, above Blanchland

2nd and 3rd pics down are on a ride we did from Brampton back to Hexham. first one is on the descent to Slaggyford, second one from Clairgillhead to Ninebanks

Then the Dipton Burn, including one fo the best short and sharp descents around here (that's legal!)

Hexhamshire Common, above Allendale

Last one is in Dukehouse (Cock) Wood, about 300 yrds from my house 🙂

ir_bandito - - I knew these well, lived in allendale for 6 years 😉 the second last one looks like the track that drops to the hut on the way to hangmans hill, just past the steep down up across the stream, just a beautiful spot, 360 degree view of nearly nothing. Beautiful.

EDIT and the descent to Clargillhead is brilliant and used to change every winter!

Where did you descend to Slaggyford from, Croglin Fell? Did you go that way? The bridleway just seems to diappear. Which way from Slaggyford? Could you let me have the basic route please?

I live in the centre of Newcastle and have uploaded some routes that are easily accessible from the city here. I've always found the walkers in Chopwell super friendly.

My mistake, the pic wasn't on the descent to Slaggyford, it was here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=357915&Y=552040&A=Y&Z=120
but we did go up Croglin Fell, and got told off by a gamekeeper for riding on the landrover track, not the marked bridelway. It does now cross the county border, but there's not an awful lot of it on the ground. Worth taking a GPS to follow it.

I'll see if I can find the full route on Memory Map next time I get a chance. Its fairly obvious though as there's only really one way to go.

ti_pin_man - spot on! the dips just before that section are great.
