O U C H... My son just experienced the pain of going over a drop off, leant back over the back wheel, and caught his clothes and more important part in between the spinning back wheel and frame. Whilst he maintained a degree of composure, my god, did it hurt! I’m thinking a small mudguard might help in case this happens again, any thoughts?

You don't need a mudguard.
My mate did that in 1992 on his Muddy Fox Courier. Crotch of his jeans caught between the wheel and the frame.
It's 2020. He's never done it since.
Learning.

Also, we've never stopped mentioning it and laughing about it since, so that helps.
