I'm looking for a new fork to eventually replace the SID Select+ on my Transition Spur. Thought about going RS Pike Ultimate, Fox 34, 34 SC, even Ohlins, but then came across a few reviews for the Mattoc Pro which seem to suggest this could be another potential for my type of riding (downcountry weight @ 1,750g, easy to change travel without buying a new air shaft, amazing ride quality, looks great).
Any real world experiences to share? I'm specifically interested in reliability, ease of service, parts availability etc.
I had the Mattoc Comps and they were great for what they are, I can imagine the Pro are amazing.
My issue was the bushings developed play, I contacted Manitou about it multiple times and apart from an initial email saying they'd get back to me they completely ignored me.
While they're good products when they're working I personally wouldn't buy another Manitou product again, as they don't have the reliability or even good customer service to make up for the lack of reliability.

I had a set for a short while before swapping from 27.5 to 29 and liked them a lot, so much so that I bought their big brother (Mezzer pro) for the new bike. Service should be easy, I had to change the travel (which is just spacers unlike the fox/RS shaft stupidity) when they arrived and other then the requirement for a special socket (slim walled, can be made from a normal socket) to get one of the foot nuts off there is nothing difficult. Supposedly you need a modified cassette tool however I modified an old one then found that my unmodified one also fit! Again modifying a cassette tool is easy.
Ditto here. Great forks (pro 27.5 non-boost) Still got them hanging on the wall. TFT service them iirc?

I'd have to buy them from Ze Germans (Bike24 stock Manitou).
I have the V1 version (650b, non boost) but with the IRT upgrade. I think they're great, it's a shame they're not more readily available and I would happily have had them on my other bikes if I could buy them.

I had Mattoc pros, excellent fork, i ended up upgrading both my bikes to Mezzers 130/29 and 160 27.5.
the new Mattoc wasn't announced that long ago must be due soon. the main complaint with the Manitou stuff is there can be a lot of variables to play with, and the out of the box setup instructions never seemed to be right. There was some QC issues reported, although nothing ever experienced and had 6? different Manitou forks from recent years. And lastly, its a little challenging to get UK based spares at times.
We had a previous gen mattoc on my son's Rose Granite Chief for years - jeez oh that was a lovely fork, so smooth and progressive.
I've had mastodons on the 29+ and Mezzer Pros on the Pole for a number of years, both excellent.
Reliability has been A1. Servicing very easy (it's nice that it is basically same for all Manitou forks - once you are using their stuff it's piss easy).
TFTuned have done a full service and seal replacement on the Mezzers earlier this year. Weirdly they could not source the service / seal replacement kit, but I already had it in the 'suspension bits' drawer so sent that with the forks. I tend to buy essential spares at time of purchase.
So, as above, and as with Hayes brakes, bits and box situation not ideal.
Really lovely forks though.
I've always found Manitou forks plush and reliable but just buy RS not because I think they are better just the parts are so easy to get.
I had a set of Pros on my old Bird Aeris from 2015-2020 and they were incredible - immensely tuneable, very plush while still offering good support. I haven't found anything that matches their tunability without having to open it up and do some proper workshop tinkering. They lasted really well until they didn't basically - the travel stopped returning fully and when I sent them off to TFT for a service they basically said they were ****ed. To replace the bit that broke was around £300 with workshop time, so I just bought a new fork.
I'd 100% buy one again though - still run the Mattoc comp on my Nukeproof Scout and that's always surprisingly good for such a 'basic' fork.
Another Manitou Mattoc fan. I have one on my old 26 bike, ~2015-2020. Great fork very supple initial stroke lots of adjustment to get it setup exactly how you want it. It was very reliable and easy to service. There are helpful videos on Youtube showing how it's all done.
New bike has a Pike Ultimate which is pretty good but I don't think can compete with the old Mattoc in small bump compliance and tracking over rooty sections. Don't have the funds for a new fork but if the Pike was to break down and I needed to get a new fork Manitou will be at the top of my list.
Likewise, I love them, hence I have 2 sets of Mattoc's and a Mezzer. Great forks (performance vs cost ratio) which are simple to service as well.
I’ve got a set on my commuter/longer ride SolarisMax. They’re pretty good, and a very clever travel adjustment set up… except when I tried to reduce my travel from 140 to 120 mm I found the cap you need to undo was too tightly closed, so they just stay 140mm.
The adjustment options are overwhelming. I think NZ firm Shockcraft had some good online resources, but as I don’t hammer them I haven’t really tinkered much.
I'm thinking it's going to be easier to buy Manitou in Europe than the UK. Hayes are headquartered in the US but they also have a small distribution setup in Germany which is probably why most of the German online stores carry some of their kit. Still not super easy to find though. R2 Bike (German site) stocks the full service kits. My local (Spanish) suspension guy works on Manitou stuff but doesn't sell them, only Ohlins, Fox, and RS.
Shhh,don't tell everyone! Mattoc pros are great, bigger brother the mezzer pros are also great. I also really like the mcleod shock, really simple to maintain and modify. I can only assume the mara and mara pro are the same.
The only let down is the UK distributer and lack of support if something goes wrong
@reeksy have you used the trick of adjusting the travel whilst you have a shock pump attached?
I've used my 160mm travel Mattoc's at everything from 120 to 160 but never properly shortened the travel. I've currently got them at 120 on my 4x bike and they're great.
How does that work exactly?
When you have a shock pump attached, it fills up the positive and negative air chambers at the same time (it's why the valve isn't a standard schrader). It means you can move the fork up and down without any resistance and it will remain where you leave it.
Attach your shock pump, slide the fork 20mm down into its travel (it should just remain there), then remove the pump. It should now stay at 120mm. I think Pinkbike referenced this quirk in their original V1 Mattoc review.

It's also the reason you can't use a Shockwiz with a Mattoc!

May also explain why I can only get 110mm travel out of my lad’s Manitou Machete (or whatever the cheap qr ones are called?) there’s probably 10mm of sag when I’m adding air!
The distributor used to be Hotlines, now it's Hayes GmbH. Last time I was in touch with them about brake parts a few months ago they sent it over free. Said they were working on the distribution situation.

It looks like it's now their trail fork, it used to be a 180mm brake mount and 170mm max travel and now it's 160 mount and 150 max travel.
I'd love to buy one but I've not seen one for sale at a reasonable price for years.
