Looking at purchasing an actual fully UST rim for my next set of wheels. Been using the EX721s for a couple of years and have only praise for them so would like to stick to Mavic.

Anybody use either?

819's here, several sets, solid as a very solid thing but then I ain't gnarr and just ride...
I had the choice of Stan's when I got my 2nd set but decided that due to my god like physique, the mavic's even with there narrowness & weight disadvantage were the better choice for me.
Haven't regretted it.

See I like to think that my riding is slightly 'Gnarr', and the Ex721 have stood up so far, the 819s I like due to the weight saving, but then I'm worried that if they're only All Mountain and my riding drifts away from that then I'll end up regretting it.

On the flipside, the 823s will be even heavier than my 721s which, arent particularly light.

FWIW i've used 721s with stans strips for 4 years and they've been flawless. Lighter than an 823 setup and cheaper too, tho a little less strong...

Then maybe you should consider the Stan's rim options as well? Even if you have to faff with rim tape to make em properly tubeless
Wider rims and less weight...

EDIT: Though as above, maybe just fit rim tape to your current wheelset?

721s, stans strip and std. rim tape plus UST high rollers = fuss free tubeless IME. Will inflate fine with a trackpump with no sealant.

Did have one flat at fort bill where I cracked the rim, but that'd kill an 823 too...

I have a friend who rides XM719's and is seriously into hucking, jumping and riding 'big' stuff. He rides occasional downhill races on them too. He lives near me on the edge of the Cairngorms.

He is however only about 65kg and 5' 6'' so maybe that is a factor in their survival.

I ride 719s and am not as gnarr as said mate but I've been very impressed with their longevity in the highlands. Had dt5.1s before and they were a bit soft IMO

I have been using 819s on my hardtail for a few months now, they are holding up nicely. They sealed fine with standard (non ust tyres) and haven't burped or deflated at all but I am quite light. What more could you want?

Stans Flow seems the obvious answer... Wider, lighter, and IME stronger than 819s. Tubeless performance is identical once the yellow tape is on... I have both and there's nothing really wrong with the 819, but the Flows have them squarely beat IMO. I wouldn't buy another 819.

I do currently run my EX721s tubeless just for the record, but just liked the idea of it all being done for you.

I'll have a look into stans flows.

ive 819s on the hardtail, for just over two years now, one ding to the rim but other than that faultless

i bought them after i got a set of 823s that came on my big bike.

UST rims with UST tyres, LUST tyres and TLR tyres all inflate without problems

however ive no experience of stans, i dont particularly care about weight

I've used both 819 and 823's in the past. For me the 819 were absolute pants on my XC, really weak sidewalls but sealed easy peasy. 823 were flawless on my DH bike!
This was before AM was invented so now I'm not sure...

Just gone with some Flows so quite excited to see how those perform.

823's are pretty bomb proof. But for the weight, the should be.

A few years ago I a particulary bad tubeless experience racing DH, I think I must have ended up doing 5 or 6 runs with a flat rear tyre at Rheola. The 823 had a few cosmetic marks but that was it. The published weight is a good 60g lighter than the actual weight for them (and the 819 to be fair) as Mavic very conveniently forget to weigh them with the eyelets.

I've been using 819s for a couple of years and they're still in good nick, I ride quite a bit of DH too and have had some pretty big cases but the rims have been fine! I hate trying to get high rollers to seal on them tubeless though, in fact I rarely bother running them tubeless anymore!

Ok first impressions of the flows actually look pretty good! Weight seems good as well.

How exactly do they work? If I remember correctly the Mavic ones needed no tape. Do these still have to have a tape fitted?

Does this pretty much mean the flows will end up just like by EX721s are at the moment?

Thanks

Gsuperstar- you'll want to fit the yellow tape and valve, NOT the rubber rim strip- Flows aren't UST, so they're basically a tubeless ready rim, they need the tape to make them airtight but they have a bead to retain the tyre just like a UST rim does. Once the yellow tape's on, they work exactly like an 819 does.

Some people do prefer to use the rubber rim strip anyway but my experience is, as long as you stick to good quality tyres there's no need for that- I use standard, non-UST tyres on mine and I've never had a problem. Not the hardest rider in the world but that's been good for racing downhill poorly 😉

Northwind - Thanks for your advice. I always buy official UST tyres anyway.

So to summarise.

The Flows with a yellow tape, become tubeless ready rims with a bead.

The current EX721s with Stans No Tubes, are the same except dont have the bead? Which presumably make them not as ideal as the Stans?

That's it, basically. The bead on the Stans rims is better than the stans strips- just as good as on an 819, so very secure and also easy to fit a tyre to.

I just put my Flows on the DH bike in place of my 721s... TBH I'm not sure how good an idea that is, guess I will find out!

Have had 819s but now much prefer Stan's Flow - wider, stronger, lighter. What's not to like.

What width tyres can the Satns Flows ZTR take?

Have been running Flows on my DH bike for the last two years. Always used UST tyres (as I already had them) and they are holding up very nicely. Along with UK stuff they have survived two trips to the Alps and a very rocky trip to Spain.
Also have some 819's which are still perfect (on my trail bike), but any new rims will be Flow's.
Superstar were doing some blinding deals on a full wheel set that would not cost much more than buying rims/spokes & build for your current hubs.

819's & 823's here - 96kg kitted and use them for everything including DH racing, mega, & general bombing around. I build my own wheels and have never had an issue with either model of rim.

I use 819's and 823's. I'm about 85kg, usually you can add a big pack onto that. I find that I wreck the 819's on the back, they gradually go out of shape more and more. The last one lasted for about a season. They are fine on the front for me and still true after 4 years. I've now gone 823 on the back and it's been great over the last season. It needs trued up occassionally and I break the odd spoke but other than that it's great.

Just fitted flows to my other bike. They look good, time will tell how it works though!

I run non tubeless tyres on it but without tubes. Generally a singleply minion on the front and either a singleply advantage on the back if I'm guiding, or a double ply high roller or similar if it's just for fun.
