I have 3x10 at the moment which is good for my type of riding but considering 2x10 when the new xt comes out later this month with a double chainset , but is there any set backs with this set up ?

only downside is you tend to loose either the top end or bottom end of the gear range.

But for most these are gears you are unlikely to be using.

As you can see, no real disadvantages at all.

Chainstay clearance is very tight on some bikes with the bigger ring closer to the BB, just make sure your bike is double compatible.

yeah what he said...I had to buy a smaller big chainring for my OnOne 456C...no clearance otherwise

Some years ago I went from 44/32/22 to bash/32/22 by simply replacing the 44 and adjusting the front mech

This worked well for me for 3 or 4 years and then a bought a specific 36/22 double crankset but found the gears I used most were now between the two chainrings and I found myself shifting on the front a lot

I'm now back to 44/32/22 with a new 10 speed groupo on a 29er but will look at dropping the big ring soon in favour of a bash as soon as I've worked out what suits me best with the clown wheels.

so, to answer the OP - the only disadvantage I found was when I went to a specific set up rather than a 'ghetto' one

I've gone from 44-32-22 and 11-34 to 36-22 and 11-32 now and find I stay in the bigger ring most of the time. I decided that if I ever used 44x12 off road I would risk death and on tarmac descents, just tuck and freewheel for the same speed.
My new bike climbs better than the old one so not missing the 34t low gear.
I use a Sram 1050 rear cassette and a 1070 chain with steel Deore (not 10s specific) 36t ring (decided on steel due to Peaks grinding paste and more expected use of main ring, plus SLX old 32t was steel toothed and lasted 18 months with no wear.
10s shifting seems much smoother, especially on Sram stuff, snick-snick-snick!

I think the concept of 2 X 10 gears is good. But for the mass market (thats me) 27x36 or even 26x36 is less good as a bottom gear. This probably doesn't apply to most furum users but I think its a step back for most bike buyers.

I'd rather have say 24x36 upfront. But I don't needs will be a factor in what people are sold

I do probably favour a rather high cadence

Most bikes come with 22x32 as the lowest gear I think. As you can see from the chart, going to a 26, you only lose 2 gears, and they are ridiculously low anyway.

What's the chainring spacing like on these "new-fangled" 2x10 setups? (eg XTR 2x10, new XT2x10 that's on the way, plus the various SRAM versions)

Do the 2 rings take the place of granny+middle, with narrower setup overall? or are the 2 rings positioned sort of where the "gaps" would be in a 3 ring setup?

Just trying to work out how much clearance there'd be (a) on the frame I already own, and (b) on the frame I might buy.
