Don't need anything fancy/bling or high tech ..my priority is a strong carrier that'll hold a fairly heavy bike ( sometimes with panniers ) without wobbling/swaying all over the place when driving pot holed back roads! (I guess I could remove the panniers) .Anyone recommend anything that won't break the bank or is it "you get what you pay for" . thanks in advance

Probably best to have a look for one where the front wheel comes off & the carrier holds the fork. They always look a lot less wobble.

Have a look on roofbox.co.uk

I did a couple of long trips strapping my old steel mountain bike upside down by the bars and saddle to the roof bars.

Foam around the grips then zip tie down, bungee keeping the saddle in place, again on foam. Absolutely rock solid.

I used to have a bike rack that mounted the bike upside down by the bars and then one day while riding on the road the bars stapped in two.  I can't prove it was due to the roof rack but it wasn't something I wanted to risk

When travelling long distances with the bike on the roof I add straps to tie the bike to either end of the bars. It's rock solid and allows you to use any old bike rack you like really as long as the bars have a slight overhang to attach the straps to
