My mate is look to spent around the £1k mark on a full suss. Nothing more than 140mm travel. He's getting tired of looking at the classifieds so thinking about buying new. Any bargains out there and what's the kona like?

Also the new Boardman FS Team...

Great kit for the money.

Think the Kona got OK reviews, here is one of a higher-up model...

Looks like a good buy tbh, so long as it fits alright and will suit the riding he's likely to do.

look at the lower number model Canyon Nerve's - they get cheaper but retain value.

Nerve 5 as above.

I've just bought one of their roadbikes and will be ordereing a hardtail for a mate soon. Unbelieveable value for money.

That model of Dawg is a fine bike! 140mm front, 6 inch rear. Alot of spec for the money when on sale too

What Mountain Bike (or MBUK, one of them) have a review of full suss £1k ish bikes this month, if that sort of thing helps.

The Canyon was streets ahead, if your mate can go the extra £200, otherwise the Boardman.

I can't stop looking at the Canyon site btw, and I don't even need a bike.

I'd only buy used at that price, get a decent bike for that, wouldn't bother with a new bike for under £2k.

You can pick up a clearance model for not much more than 2nd hand (less going by what some people expect to get on the classifieds because its got "a hope cnc seat clamp") and not have to worry about getting a ringer and more importantly you'll get a full warranty.

I've got an '07 Dawg so its the Alu frame not scandium and less travel but frame has been bullet proof for me and I've enjoyed riding it. I've switched to 15mm axle on the front of mine like the deluxe and I feel it has made a difference.

Did you actually look at the bikes linked above though?

Canyon looks very decent, Kona too.

Last week I purchased the Nerve AM 7, which was £1,800. Fantastic value seeing as the other bikes I was looking at were easily a thousand pounds more expensive. I was going to go for the AM 8, but couldn't justify paying the extra £500 for a Reverb seatpost and XTR components.

Still to properly test it out due to working away but it will be going on a thorough test at the beginning of June when I plan to do a mini road trip visiting the D&G trail centres.
