Heading over to Antur Stiniog in the next few weeks and would be interested to know people's thoughts on a suitable tyre choice for this time of year...

Bike is an Enduro 29 and the current choice from what I have lying in the garage would be a Specialized Butcher front and rear. I do also have a purgatory that could be used on the rear.

They are the control casing, so not the beefiest, but they've managed fine so far on anything from the roots and mud of Eastridge to the rocks of the off-piste stuff around Llandegla/Worlds End/Panorama.

I may venture onto the less gnarly black at Antur but will spend most of the time on the blue/red I expect.

Stick with what I've got or something beefier/tackier for the front?

Dual ply FTW at Antur - especially on the rear. Butchers and Minions are probably the ideal tyre imo, but definitely in a meaty form as its a rocky old place!

No mud, just rocks.

Spend the money saved on tyres on body armour or a full face if you haven't got one.

Great riding though

Something thick cased.
It's eaten 2 Bontrager XR4's
A brand new Hans Dampf (snakeskin)
And an exo Ardent.
All 29er on either my Yelli or Codeine.
It's just the square edge nature of the slabbed slate used to build it (thank Mai!!)
Take a full face. It's not gnarly but the nature of slate (and it being like glass when wet) means there are no small offs.I had an innocuous 'step off' and looked like I'd been on a date with Freddy Kruger.
It's bloomin good though (just brake as soon as you land on the very last big double!!)

It's not gnarly

I'd say there are some sections of the double black they had the national on that are pretty gnarly… the fenced drop into the tight left hander next to the rock face (with 'don't clip in' written on it!) wakes you up hit at speed.

Tyre choice - same as the summer, not too nobbly, dual ply and tubeless or you'd best pack some tubes and a pump for each run.

I'd go dual ply too.

Both of my trips there involved my dual ply Minions. One of the chaps I was with was on trail tyres and got an awful lot of punctures.

The double black woke me up and made me think! That drop referred to above looked interesting when I was last there (I pussied out of it).

Thanks for the suggestions.

Full face will be going with me, for sure. Will also be running tubeless but will take some DH tubes just in case...

I've recently got a spare set of wheels so will be putting some DH orientated tyres on them for trips like this, hence the question.
