Looking to go to Antur with the boy in October whilst holidaying in Wales.

I ride a Bird Zero 29er with a 140mm Fox 36. No FF helmet so won't be doing the blacks.

Previously ridden Laggan Wolftrax reds and the reds and blacks at Llandegla.

Looking at their website they seem to recommend a full sus but I assume I'll be ok if I pop a chunky rear tyre on.

Boy is on his Airdrop so I expect him to leave me for dust 😂

Yeah, you'll be right. First time I went I was riding an old 26inch, 100mm travel Giant Anthem. OK so it was a full susser, but very much a XC one.

However at the end of September I'm going on a proper trail bike, (Orange Stage Eco) and I've purchased a full face helmet so looking forward to that!

I did Dyfi with a DMR trailstar at the start of the year, it was fine.  Can't imagine Antur is harder than Dyfi, so I'm sure you'll be fine.  I would recommend a full face for bike parks tho.

I've done Antur on Giant Anthem with bigger forks. It was fine, although speed was lower to account for my 11 year old.

I'd not do it without a full face helmet though. Too much slate around, it moves an awful lot and usually sideways.

I've not been for years but took my old ragley down every trail and almost all of the main lines. A bunch of jumps that I couldn't make anything of and just had to roll, some bits that you're definitely supposed to ride differently that I kind of minced down, and I admit I shat it off the big rock with a drop in it thing, I'm too scared of heights 😉 I had the advantage of scouting it all on a dh bike, it'd be harder to ride "first time" on a hardtail but I'd not hesitate to take one anyway. There's a good mix of trails, I don't think I'd have felt at all shorted if I'd stuck to just some of them.

As far as full face goes, it's really not a bad idea to have one. Antur is very jaggy and everything you can land on is a rock of some sort. It's also a little bit unstable- I always forget this, I crashed not on the main line but by pulling off to the side onto what turned out to be just loose slate shards with zero grip. And in the wet can be really quite skatey in places.

Brilliant place to ride though.

If you take the advice about having a full face helmet, this is the one I bought. First one I've ever owned, so nothing to compare to, but seems decent enough to me.

A full-face is pretty cheap, especially compared to the cost of having wished you’d worn one!

I did it on a 26” Soul with 140mm Fox 32. Your Bird will be miles better! Just don’t underestimate how tiring it is, notice if you’re getting wobbly as the day progresses and don’t do “one last run!”

Do you like riding rocky trails? If so, you'll be fine.

You will be fine on a hardtail,  but get a ff helmet.  You might not come off but if you do it is not friendly

Thanks all, ride the Peak District so not averse to rocks. Will buy a FF helmet to preserve my good looks 😂, thanks for the links.

If you have a large noggin, this is a really nice FF enduro helmet:

You'll be fine on a hardtail, especially in recent years they have done alot of work smoothing out some jaggy bits on the trails
