In other words, I'd like a  light packable jacket that projects against a rainshower, that doesn't make me look like a tool, doesn't make me sweat balls  (softshell maybe?) and most importantly doesn't rip when I crash (looking at you Fox Attack)

Suggestions? Ta!

Decathlon, but don't just look at the cycling aisle, there's gems where you wouldn't expect them.I love their kit.

Madison Pac-it on SportPursuit for £23.

Can’t vouch for the lack of toolish-ness, but it wouldn’t be the jacket’s fault. lol

STW had a link for one that was so cheap you could just throw it away when it gets ripped ... Only £80 😉

Light rain/warmish days are actually pretty tricky- waterproof will always be warmer than no waterproof, and thin ones are naturally rippier. Gilets can be great- they keep your body warm, while letting the arms be radiators still, and there's less bits to rip. Though they do make you look  bit french.

the pertex montane use on their featherlight tops is surprisingly robust for something so lightweight. you can tune the waterproof/breathable by re-proofing or not.

the montane stuff is also surprisingly expensive now. you used to be able to get them for 25 quid. maybe take a look around at other manufacturer's using the same material.

Montane dyno jacket is my go to on wet, mild days, great jacket, must be 7 years old now.
