Just changed BB on my hardtail and pulled the back brake lever two get the bike out of the the house and the lever never reset. It stayed pulled against the handlebars and now won't work. I pushed the pistons back in and it reset, but then did the same again. Any ideas, or do I have to buy a new brake? This is the second brake this has happened to, the first is a warranty repair and is awaiting judgement at Shimano Towers. Got to admit, I'm pretty narked at this. Seems my ride tomorrow is blown...

Was your bike upside-down for the BB change perhaps? Would a good bleed be worth a try?

Tried the bleed. Nothing. Wouldn't accept the mineral oil. Bloody annoying. Taken it off the bike to see if I can have a proper fettle of it. Otherwise I don't know whether to try an have a word with Shimano (out of warranty so probably a no go)...

Sound ****ed, even with no fluid you would still expect the lever to return to full extension.

Pretty sure it's dead. My XT front brake did the same thing just before Christmas after a really really wet, filthy ride. I assumed that gunk got into the master cylinder. I replaced the lever and all is good.

Seems to be a spate of issues with Shimano brakes right now. Was trying to sort a set for a mate at the weekend. The caliper was binding on the rotor but the lever was pulling back to the bars. Totally counterintuitive if you're familiar with the inner workings of disc brakes.

My SLX brake has just done the exact same thing. I was doing a bleed, pumped the lever a couple of times to set the pads out a little, there was a sudden crunch from the lever and it wouldn't return.

Looking at the lever, the plunger wasn't re-setting. I thought it was something to do with the bleed, tried to get mineral oil into the system from the caliper - syringe would not budge.

It's with the bike shop now but it's looking like a return under warranty.
