I've been looking at CPF for home made lights and deal extreme at the various deals on there for lights and am just getting blown away by all the jargon. I've had a look through here but some of the topics that were on last winter appear to be missing or I can't find them.

I've been looking at a couple of fleabay deals for some lights, my riding won't be majorly exciting at night but will be offroad. I've been looking at lights using cree leds as these seem to be getting good feedback on CPF whether as a basic light or as a bsis for creating something a little better.

Been looking at the following and just want some feedback on what you think of them from your past experiences of similar units [if any]

Cheap and nasty #1
Cheap and possibly ok

They may all be a pile of poo but am looking for one to be bar mounted as a minimum and will then look at the possibility of another helmet mounted light shortly after.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

One on the bars & one on the helmet should be OK but the lumen claims are a little exagerated by most Ebay sellers.

the first one is described here http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/psa-silly-cheap-200-odd-lumen-bike-lighttorch

your second and third links are the same?

I'm in the same boat - I don't want to shell out too much money, I had thought about getting 2 of those torches - one for the bars and one for the lid, but then I was thinking i might as well just get a DX light for the bars and stop faffing about...

I've got the first and something similar to the 2nd. 1st is fine as a commuter but not enough for off-road unless you ride quite slow. The second is a nice torch, the focus makes for a very intense spotlight that throws a very long way. Pretty good for biking, too. It'll be a but cheaper from DX if you can wait a few days. Have a look at the P7s on DX, too. Lots of light and most have lower settings. You need to have a good think about whether to commit to LIon batteries or AA/AAA, you'll want to carry a spare or, two. I use a P7 on the bars and option 2 on the helmet sometimes.

this was meat to be the second link

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the other topic. A useful read. Would have to consider something better than AAA batteries for my riding. If push comes to shove then I may end up having to get a deal extreme all in one set.

yep, i'm leaning towards the Bastid for the bars, and seeing how i get on - if I get into this night-riding malarky, then I will get one of those torches for lid as an extra.

Dickyboy - that looks like a good unit. What battery life are you getting from it?

What's the dx bastid? Looked on deal extreme and googled it but no luck?

Lastest verson of the DX Magicshine unit (try googling that instead), I had thought it got named the Bastid on Trout's dissection thread, but it's tagged on several earlier threads too, so no longer sure.

Ah right. I've been looking at that one for ages. Going to order the top one as a helmet mount. Looked at the previous forum topic and they have compared it with a 1w version...hopefully it is a 5w as stated otherwsie will ask for my money back!! May get the Stephen Cycles one if the hong kong special doesn't perform.

Sorry to digress aain from my original topic but I've been looking at a whole load of diy bike light topics and web pages which seem relatively straightforward to do but my problem is I don't know jack about what led to buckpuck to battery pack. Can anyone point me in the direction of a breakdown or idiots guide on how you work out what should be paired. I'm quite liking the race day nutrition bike light but with no knowledge of the above I know I won't know what to look for properly etc. Any help would be most appreciated
