You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Well I just smashed my third Xen yesterday messing around on the trails under the TV tower at Swinley. Big dent in the top and the liners split in two!
I'm not dead, and the Xen fit fine I've a huge head and it's an odd shape so some 'big' helmets wont even get onto my head, so seeing as Giro's crash replacement is £60 (and this would be my 3'rd replacement!) am I missing anything better elsewhere?
Urge Endur-O-Matic, only comes upto 60cm and doesn't seem to be in stock in any LBS's only online.
Giro Hex - probably a safe bet as it's another giro?
Fox Flux? What's the sizing like?
i went from a xen to a hex a few years ago and tbh i'd never spend the extra on a xen again as the hex is much nicer for me, BUT they do fit slightly differently so obviously try before you buy... however, head coverage wise there's nothing in it.
Currently have a hex, xar and endur-o-matic all in large. Maybe I'm blessed but they all fit great and really comfortable. The urge helmet is significantly warmer than the two giros (don't believe the crap mbuk spout about it being well ventilated).
As first reply. Plus the new Hex gets the new roc-loc system. And it breathes better IMO.
How's the crash replacement work with Giro?
Like you, I have a Xen and the fit is excellent for my big bonce. I've tried the Hex and found it doesn't fit as well (pressed at the front) but your head may vary. The Fox Flux is definitely worth considering, I found the fit very similar to the Xen but with slightly better rear coverage. I don't think there is such a good choice of colours though, if that's an issue.
Uvex XP100 here - love it although unsure how big they go as one size fits all.
I have a big head and have just replaced my giro xen with the new 661 recon helmet, more protection around the rear of the head and an excellent fit. at around £60-£70 it's around the same cost.
+1 on the 661 recon. Just got my new one and it fits lovely.
I went through a phase of smashing my Giro lids a few years ago. Crash replacement was out because no receipts. I used to be a top drawer man (E2 and Xen) but because of the cost decided to try a Hex and it's fine. Funnily enough my helmet smashing phase has stopped.
I have the same dilemma. Both my Xen's need replacement. The new Xar looks awful on me and doesn't fit as well. The Hex makes my already large head look even bigger.
How is the Fox Flux venting? Better than a Xen? (I'm also plagued with getting a hot head!!!).
Poc Trabec / stop crashing.
I mashed my 5 year old Xen and replaced it with a Xar. Seemed smaller actually, ended up going down to a medium. Ace fit, very light, new roc-loc system is better. Expensive tho.
Uvex - I've got a fairly large swede and the Uvex lids have plenty left. Their fit doesn't rely on the helmet for the fit but a full band around the head. They are cheaper. Love mine and will buy another.
Having recently split a helmet headbutting a rock at Dalbeatie I was rather stuck as it was the first day of a '4 Stanes' trip. We were doing Kirroughtree the nextday so it was down to whatever fitted me in the bike shop there. This happened to be a Fox Flux which I probably wouldn't have considered otherwise. However, I am a convert , excellent helmet. Slightly heavier than I would have liked but very comfortable and as cool as you are going to get with a sweating old bloke underneath it. Sizing was very generous. I always automatically pick up large but I need adjustment down to smallest on the Flux large.
Had a Flux and wasn't overly impressed with the build quality - the fit was good, but I ended up having to bodge a couple of clips for the helmet strap as the plastic adjusters at the ears both broke fairly soon after buying it.
Just bought myself a Xar and rather enjoying the light and breezy feel of it. The retention system at the back is a bit less intrusive than the one on the Flux, although I had the older version of that helmet and I think it's been updated in the last few months.
I fit into a medium Xar fine but it feels very perched whereas the large sits lower but the inner harness digs into the top of my ears!! I can't even get a medium Xen on my head!
I did try a Flux on recently and was certainly a better fit than when i first tried one when they first came out, so they must have improved the fit somehow?
I've got a second hand hex if you want to buy it? only ridden a few times, never crashed!
email in profile if interested...

I used the crash replacement with no receipt - just had to tell them it was a present. Not much cheaper than just buying from CRC or somewhere though, and they sent me the wrong helmet twice.
Just got a 661 Recon to replace a smashed Hex as I fancied a change. Very light and after a few rides it seems cooler as I am yet to be showered by my own sweat as a hot person.
Not sure on sizing for you as I am a pin head. Fox Flux was nowhere near fitting so may suit a bigger head?

Send receipt, mashed helmet and a description of what happened to madison with a cheque for the new helmets, Xen's are now £60.

I've never sent one, they were all crash replacements apart from the first one!

Yea, they used to be £45, now they're £60
Cheers for the reviews, time for some shopping.
