Afternoon all,

If I load a course on my Garmin that's 20 miles long but I start my ride away from the course and join it say 5 miles in, will I be directed back to the start of the course or will it start to navigate from where I join it onwards?

Cheers!

It'll give you the option to navigate to the start, if you press no it'll just join in wherever you cross it.

My 800 asks me whether I would like to navigate to the start or not. If not it picks the course up wherever I join it.

Excellent, thats what I wanted. So if I leave the course at any point I dont have to rejoin it where I left it?

Basically I want to follow a route but take detour before joining it again further on.

That would work, just make sure you gave recalculate turned off!

If I understand you correctly it will work exactly as you want. When I use courses for group rides I've planned I try to allow a few short cuts just in case we need to cut a few miles or tricky bits out. My 800 gives me the nasty off course warning when I leave the course then the happy course found when I rejoin it wherever that may be. If you wanted to rejoin where you left I think it would be up to you to navigate your way back.

I should point out that I am talking about off road courses not turn by turn road routes. I plan them on bikeroutetoaster and add turn instructions manually.

Excellent, thanks all. I've used the 810 to navigate on roads before with great success. I'm going to try it off road this evening (mostly off road) but want to take a few detours including joining the course further on. (stealing a course from a friend that started from his house rather than mine!)

Beautiful evening for it.
