Ok, i have a tow bar on the car now... i was looking at a BUZZ RACK Buffalo 4 as that seemed nice and compact and could carry 4 bikes, 2 adult and 2 kids.
Anyone got one and had much joy with non regular double diamond frames? There is a adapter you can use to attach to the bike so it will hang from the adapter rather than the bike, anyone tried one?

when people use a flatbed type towbar at a trail centre or out in the wild, what do you do with rack? leave it on? or store in the car.
benefit of a folding towbar rack (of any sort) is you can take it off and put in car, if nothing else makes less likely that someone ****s it when driving in the car park.
I've had to use one of these on my Maxxraxx for odd shaped bikes and it's always worked absolutely fine with them, but I wouldn't be happy leaving a bike unattended only fastened to the rack by it.
I've never had any problems with my 4 bike wheel mounted rack in carparks either, but I only leave it on the car when actually transporting bikes or when we're riding them.
I use a long chain (normally secures my bike in the garage) through the 'crash bar' behind the bumper and then through the bike rack.

does that work with dropper posts?

Yeah that's fine same thing, just slightly cheaper at Halfords.
Neither I nor my mate who uses one far more than me have ever had problems using them in droppers, just make sure the post is fully extended and it should be fine.

I'm in the same boat as @alcolepone as I'm pondering a buffalo, or going all out on an Atera Strada DL or the Buzz Eazay 4.
Occasional 4, usually 2-3 bikes.
To include kids 24" and full suspension.
Any more recent advice? Am very tempted by the buffalo, but then to add on a light board and possibly a couple of hangers, takes the price up and the natural conclusion seems to be why not just get the Eazay 4.

I have an Atera Strada DL3 I'd sell. Think you can buy an extension and arm for a 4th bike.
Don't understand all these points about taking the rack off and shoving it in the car etc. Do you take roof bars off when you park up? I pity the fool who takes the time to pick the lock on a Strada DL3 and then has to try and carry/drag the damned ship anchor away...
