You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
The second May bank holiday will be my first time riding MTB in the lakes. Staying at the bottom of Ullswater. Mixed group, half of whom would rather be climbing, and the other half (me) is quite unfit. I'll recce the cockpit - howtown decent for later in the year summer holidays with the kids.
I can map read, but planning an actual route from the vague descriptions in previous threads has me fairly uncertain. I don't want to end up on a footpath full of walkers or rolling down a double track next to the best bit of single-track on a route.
Obvious choice is borrowdale bash and whinlatter for ease of planning but there has to be something better?
How far?
How high?
How techi
If you want short then get the ferry to Pooley Bridge then ride back via Cockpit to Howtown then Ullswater Bridleway.
If you want a bit longer then go over Boredale Hause, up to Pooley Bridge, C to H, then return via Ullswater Bridleway. Bit like this except take the westernmost Bridleway at the southern tip of the lake. We took the other one and it's shite in that direction.

If you want short and tech then go up grisedale to the tarn and back.
If you want medium and gnarr then up Helvelyn via Keppel Cove and back via Dollywaggon and Grisedale.
If you want medium and less gnarr then up Keppel and down Sticks East.
Long and tech then do the above with an additional descent down Birkside then back up via Sticks pass west.
Long and non tech then do High Street and Helvelyn ridges ( but only if it's been very dry)
PS all the above are Bridleway. I've missed all the cheeky stuff like Seldom Seen, Fairfield, St Sunday etc to keep to your spec.
No idea, I like the idea of an epic but my riding is usually half a day at a bike park or 4 miles each way commute on the flat. Whinlatter red last year was a reasonable half day effort for me.
