Think of the positive though, my current trails up north are so quiet that if you had a bad crash you'd be eaten by badgers before anyone found you.

from the description of Swinley I'd take my chances with the badgers every time.

Are they European badgers?

I've been asked for directions at Swinley by lost noobs who looked like they'd had to bail and got lost trying to find the car park. You know what I did? I gave them directions. Another time it was a lad of about 14, no lights and it was getting dark, he'd agreed to meet his parents at the car park at a certain time and was having a bit of a Blair Witch moment, clearly quite distressed. So I rode with him to the car park.

Didn't stop to check if he was Eastern European though, maybe I should have?

As for "missing by inches" being an exaggeration - I did actually crash into another rider once at Swinley, back when it was two way. Cut his finger too, felt really bad about it - and learned to cool it.

I was up at Mabie a few weeks ago, a bloody big Deer was just standing in the middle of the red trail (just after the picnic tables). Tried to have words but it just ran off.
Honestly they have no idea. 😉

secondly the dads with the daughter were at the bottom of a trail that most riders would be doing around 15--18 mph

where most people would be doing at least 12-15 mph

Cool. The way the average speed is declining, if they go back again this weekend, it will be safe enough to pitch a tent and have a barbecue in the middle of the trail.

Result.

yes the blind ones are even more of a pest.

Are they European badgers?

Quite possibly. Might also have to contend with some more bloody immigrants soon. Coming over here, eating our deer and providing 24 hour protection against sweat and odour.

Deadkenny, is that you?

Berms to slow people down... interesting.

Yup, they're tighter than the posters in the "sweating like a ........" thread sailing to the banhammer, works though. Used to be flat out of the last bit across the fireroad and into the next section, now you hit it a little above a brisk jog.

Can be seen here (should be frozen at 1:23), the two berms around the tree scrub off all your speed, and there's a lot of time to see the fire road crossing up ahead, and you'd have less speed by that point.

Unless you weren't looking where you were going and went left about 5m before the tree down the STRAVASSHOLE line straight onto the next section (and weren't looking where you were going).

Going by the Fred title it would appear that the trail centre is indeed his. It's no wonder that he's pissed that other people are riding there.

True, I do miss days spent paddle wheeling nowhere along the ridgeway hub deep in mud before they built the yellow brick road.

I don't think it's a black and white issue to be honest.

than last night two eastern Europeans dressed in jeans and hoodies wanted directions back to the car park.

Was it this guy I’d stay clear of him if I was you.

Without knowing the exact trail referenced I don't think the ops first point is a bad one. People standing / sitting in the middle of fast bits of trail is pure stupidity. Just move off to the side, it's not hard.

I don't think I'd have stopped on a fun bit to suggest this sensibly to the dad's (who should know better), but perhaps 'get off the trail' shouted at them wasn't the most tactful option.

I think everyone having a pop at the op for this is very stereotypical of a lot of people on this forum. Starting reading the thread I was waiting for the 'entitled' comment amongst others. Presumably from the vag car group (mostly Skoda / Audi / VW) driving people who feel entitled themselves

Ps you forgot e-bikers.

Pps- blanking people who are asking for directions isn't good form.

I don't mind the first part, but blanking people who were lost just because of their clothing or birthplace is just ridiculous. I had 4 kids there 3 weekends back on ASDA bike ask me where the car park was. I was on a Strava ride, but I still stopped for 15s to tell them which way.

I think saying you nearly had a punch up because someone you shouted at called you out is not a great thing. I’m not sure what kind of car a person who acts like this drives but I’m going for a Vauxhall Corsa with stickers on the back quoting Fast and Furious.

Ahhh the corsa driver's motto.

Cash, grass or ass - I'm getting none of these.

It is a reasonable point, but you don't make reasonable points by shouting angrily at people as you hurtle past. You say 'You'd probably be better off standing just off the trail cos people come hurtling down here'. They'd probably have gone 'oh yeah ok sorry mate'.

I've managed to stop people from walking up the final descent at Cwmcarn ( 😯 ) this way, and not been sworn at.

To be honest, I was expecting a better bite from my comment, but it seems this thread doesn't need any stirring.

Keep it up guys!

Presumptuous on the 'lads' front as well. Women, girls and transgender people also ride mountain bikes and frequent the forum.

Cool. A place on the internet where people who act like a dick get called out for it.

Sounds ace.

Yeah, but it's their right to say it and it's bullying when they get called out on it.

Surely everyone in everyday life needs to just pop a chill pill (not literally, some cases yes) and just “BE”

All I will say, and this isn’t being stereotypical but sometimes I feel uneasy either riding past two or more young men that haven’t got bikes and especially if some were asking for directions...... it all depended how they looked/acted whether I’d stop tbh.... this comes from someone riding a local small bike skills area on his own near where I used to live, two lads stop him on the trail, assault him, steal his bike.....they are out there. I’m friendly but also learning not to be too naive

I was later out this morning that usual at 10:00. (usually out at 08:00)
I had to stop/slow down for all sorts of things
- families on bikes
- people with dogs
- horse riders
- horses
- pigs (let loose to eat the acorns)

Managed to not shout at anyone or get into any fights. What did I learn from my experience, make sure I get out at 08:00.
