[Closed] Annoying drivetrain slip

So thanks to lockdown I've got my full sus working pretty much perfectly with one exception.

The chain is slipping occasionally when putting down power in top gear (11 tooth). 1*10 set up. Hope 2 evo pro hub. Indexing seems fine. All shifting is good. Doesn't seem to be skipping into a lower gear - but difficult to see exactly what's happening (i can't recreate the problem in a work stand).

Tried to sort with a goat link to improve chain wrap but that hasn't helped. I've swapped cassette, mech and chain for ones that work fine on another bike and have the same problem. I've messed around with the b tension screw but again no help.

Could it be the free hub which has the usual hope wear - particularly on the smallest cog (see below) or could it be the cassette lock nut isn't tight enough?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Most likely the 11 tooth cog is shagged.

Drive chain worn out would be my guess, prob slipping on
the front cog.

Scotroutes - thanks but seems unlikely as the cassette is reasonably new and still get the same problem with another cassette

Shagged freehub would be my guess... What does the inside of the hub look like?

My bike does something similar on a 1x10.

It does it in a few gears but everything is new. I found that the quick link was perhaps the problem as eventually it broke. So got a wipperman connex but it still does it!

Next plan is chain line as at the extremes it could be better and wondered if that is causing the slip. Not sure and I’m no expert.

May not be helpful to you but I feel your frustration.

Shagged freehub would be my guess…

That's what I think too. I've just fixed mine, cranks started skipping in any gear and finally just spun around with no drive. Cleaned and re-lubed the pawls, all OK now.

Thanks for everything so far. Inside of free hub and pawls look ok.

Even so, I'm A bit tempted to try a new steel free hub, but that's probably £70, and don't want to try that and find it makes no difference.

Defo worth also switching the chain ring from the other bike (assuming you didn’t)

First guess would be worn chainring. It's just possible that the sprocket is spinning as there's often not much engagement with the hub splines. Should be easy enough to spot if that's the case - when you take it off the big tooth won't be lined up with the big gap on the sprocket. If that's the case, is there a spacer behind the big sprocket that you can remove? Otherwise try doing it up with a bigger spanner 🙂

Cable outer too short?

I had ghost shifting on my old Patriot, eventually got so frustrating I sold it, buyer solved it with one trip to a bike shop...

Cheers - a few different things to try.

As my approach is very much keep it cheap, I'll try the bigger spanner first, then cable outer, then mech hanger alignment, and new freehub. Final solution - n+1 - ideally in a few months time when all the bikes bought during lockdown are being offloaded.

First guess would be worn chainring.

I concur.. worn chainring in conjunction with the chainline to the 11t sprocket causing chain suck (and subsequent release) under load.

Mech hanger alignment would be the first thing is try, it's free! Just give it a tweak.
