Just wondering what the options are for a (vintage) tapered headtube Five? iirc Cane Creek do one, but Works Components don't? Are there any other options about these days?

I was considering doing the same on a five but hadn't got very far. I think works do one that fits but I believe you have to run an external cup on the top increasing the stack height and looking a little funny. It would be worth checking with works first as I may be talking rubbish. Please report back if you do!

Balfa you're correct works now do both a tapered headtube/tapered fork Angleset and a tapered headtube/old school 1 1/8" version. You can use the tapered/tapered with a reducer if you have a 1 1/8" steerer to future proof it. It does run an external upper cup. I've got one coming for both my alpine and my five. They are on sale at the moment too.

Just wondering why a headset and not shox bushs?
Burtec number 7002 will give you about 1.5deg slacker head angle and approx 10mm low bottom bracket.
When I did mine it was a different machine rode much better.

Cheaper to.
Bats.

I'm going mental on mine, offset bushes and an Angleset 🙂 just want to see how slack I can go without ruining it. Burgtec offset bushes took both mine down a degree and improved them so want to see if an Angleset can further enhance the dh performance. Obviously there's a trade off but tilting the saddle down a bit more should help a little on the climbs.

This is being modified to Mrs Legend spec, which requires the BB to stay roughly the same height. Mine has the bushes already, quite happy with them too

I have one for sale brand new in the classifieds, could save you a bit?

(if you're using straight forks)

The Works headsets are only off-set at the upper cup so their effect is pretty mellow. I liked the 1.5 cups on my five.
I also used a K9 2 degree headset which is offset top and bottom so pushes the front wheel out a lot, it made the bike a tank and took away the fun.

*edit*
Both of which you could borrow as you seem to be in the Borders near me, they're both sat in my toolbox doing nowt.

I went down the offset bushes route only because it was cheaper/quicker and it's made a noticeable different (in a good way), but i'd be intrigued to see whether a headset aswell was too much.

SteveDe keep us posted on how that works out (or bring it up to Dartmoor for a ride and i can have a go!).

My five is now at 64.5 deg with 140mm devilles, wheelbase is 1145mm, 17" frame, that's with the Angleset and offset bushes, I've gone a fair bit nose down on the saddle to compensate for the change in seat tube angle, reckon it'll be a fun experiment! I'm taking the alpine to triscombe on Saturday and that is very much in 160mm dh bike mode with a 63.5 deg ha and a 1190mm wheelbase on an 18" frame.
