I just thought I’d share an experience of bad luck, and ultimately good luck.
I bought some Öhlins RXF 36 on eBay for not an insignificant sum, apparently serviced a month before and in excellent condition.
Unlike most I take anything I buy like forks etc apart when it arrives (to check it over).
If I could upload photos you’d see what I found when I whipped the legs off them...the total sum of oil that came out of them was a couple ml. None in one leg and brown muck in the other (should have been 5ml in each).
I contacted the shop who serviced them and they told me it was actually back in August and they did warn the seller the stanchions were worn. Nice of the shop to be honest! A shame the seller wasn’t.
I could have returned them for a full refund but I needed forks so did what I could to sort them. Contacted a UK service centre who said my best bet is to contact Öhlins direct as new upper legs are £££ on top of a full service.
I have to give a massive shout out to Öhlins Europe who displayed exemplary customer service.
I mailed them to ask about a recall that should have been done on the fork. It hadn’t been done and this could have added to the worn stanchion issue.
They sent a postage label to get them to their MTB HQ in Germany. Two days later I was told they were knackered. To my surprise I was told some brand new ones were in the post!
Such amazing customer service! I expect it’s because the wear could have been down to the faulty seals which should have been changed on the recall. Equally it could of been due to a total lack of care for the fork by the last owner.
I guess that’s Karma for him for trying to rip someone off, a shiny new fork for me.
So, yeah...buy Öhlins! They totally stand by their products and admit when something isn’t right. Utter legends!
Yeah I agree. My shock was not holding pressure UK side not interested as the bike had belonged to Hannah Barnes. Ohlins head office had a chat amongst themselves asked me if I was ok with maintenance if they sent instructions. Par el arrived with a new £700 shock. I was expecting a service kit.
Glad they were good to you as well. I was amazed at the service. So good. I’ll certainly buy more of their products. Motorcycle ones too.
