Am I being mental……

So having owned an Orbea Alma H10 2017 for 2 years I am becoming slowly disappointed and disillusioned…..

Since discovering the rear brake is leaking (see other post) and having discussed no possibility of warranty claim I now see the front hub has some pretty bad corrosion and the chain and seat post are also showing signs of rust.

This bike has seen little use and has been kept in a dry environment when stored. I have also cleaned and lubricated the bike (obviously not enough) as I thought required…….

What am I missing guys?? – are my standards/expectations too high, I was told build quality is not what is used to be…. am I crazy or is stuff just not built to last? This was a £1500 bike and its build quality appears to be naff. Built in obsolescence so you buy new and more stuff??

I still have my first mountain bike. A Jamis Durango, bought in America in 1992. It still has original group set, wheels, chain etc etc etc and if I dragged it out my shed it shows little sign of rust and just works and this was a kids bike that got abused every day and looked after as a kid would……

Whats going on…..

Shimano brakes - disappointing but this happens to them (albeit shouldn't)
Chain - wouldn't think about it twice. Chains rust.
Seat post - would be surprised. Is it not aluminium?
Front Hub - not sure. Wouldn't expect that to have bad corrosion.

None of these sound like major issues to me. Would probably just chuck a bit of lube on the chain and ride it.

Just wait OP until you pay topshelf prices for race kit.

That then breaks or degrades rapidly.

A true eye opener.

Lack of use - That's why it's rusting.

Bikes aren't a single item, they are a collection of parts made by different people. Shimano have had issues with their brakes, that's not Jamis's fault.

To be fair Jedi you cheat by hovering just off the ground when you ride. It's the only explanation I can come up with for how you ride those timber scaffolding you have at the field of dreams 🙂

Trust you are well and I'll need to come and see you again, gravity is winning again when I jump...

Hi Jedi- my 2009 set had spokes popping out all over the mofoing place f&r and shortly after purchase from a dodgy seller “cyclesurgery” the rear hub flange sheared off!

Not impressed ...

This bike has seen little use

This is probably the cause of most of the problems (brakes being an exception).

Possibly. most folk are.
"has been kept in a dry environment"
Not completely dry , hence the rust.

a £1500 bike ... will have fairly low end components which aren't finished as well.
Chains don't normally last 2 years, so replace that, get a decent seatpost, clean and buff the front hub and next time you store it put some water repellent on the likely-to-rust parts. (Except maybe the discs).

Chain rust isn't caused by anything defective except your lubrication regime.

Other than that, yeah a bit mental, these things will corrode, maybe a bit more washing or a couple of dabs of grease needed to stop the corrosion. And the warranty on shimano stuff is 2 years IIRC?, I'd say if you're under that get it looked at.

Most of these problems would probably be reduced by more use to be honest.

If you have a 27 year old bike with the original chain on still I'm guessing your maintenance regime isn't up to scratch and may be an indicator as to the reason behind some of the issue you state.
As others have said, chalk it up to experience and move on with life. Ride the bike and look after it. Neglection is almost as bad as over riding sometimes.

How do you clean it? Do you use 'proper' bike cleaning stuff like Fenwicks/Muc-Off or do you use washing-up liquid?

If it's the latter that could be part of the problem as they normally contain salt, which doesn't do a lot of metals any good when applied in a hot solution and left to dry.

Oh, and as others have said, ride it more - you won't care so much then.

Thanks for comments - will reply as best I can - obviously I am just naive to the world of biking and what it costs.... I am being told I am looking at the over £200 to sort it all - service, new caliper, brake bleed, fork service etc etc..... I can’t think of any other item which is so fragile for its intended use that it required such care, attentions and money. I have a 2005 dirt bike - gets what it’s needs and works fine, I have a 1998 ZX6R - gets what’s it needs and goes fine.... I have a 2001 BMW - well looked after and seems to fair better than this mountain bike.....
I have a 2015 Bosch Washing machine it gets abused like hell and never given me a problem.....
Sorry - so I’m being flippant - but biking seems to have become this world where we accept fragile and highly strung components and products???

As for real answers - I have muc-off kits and products I use for cleaning
The comment about having a 27 year old bike and not maintaining it was a little unfair - I got it when I was 10... it got brought to me last year after my dad cleared out his garage and I kept it for nostalgia.... my point was it still works - obviously built to last.... not sure this Orbea will being going in 27 years....

I have started using it more and the only really issue is the brake - I just noticed the chain when I lifted it onto the car - but it is really minor.... maybe I made a mistake and should’ve got a £300 Halfords special....

Cheers - aye
