that when i order a GP5000 it comes in retail packaging and not jammed loose in a box ? ordered a gp5000 last sunday which arrived today only to find that the retailer had shipped an unboxed one that was jammed and weirdly folded into a box and twisted
i have emailed them to express my disappointment and ask them to take the 2nd hand one back
Is the tyre actually deformed - does it mount straight on a wheel? Is there any sign that the tyre is used? Some companies who also build bikes buy components in bulk/unpackaged and why they can sell them cheaper. By all means, you can be peeved if the tyre is damaged or used.
to be honest i havent tried it on a rim - sadly i cant upload photos as the forum seems to be having an issue
here is the tyre unfolded and about as straight as i could get it

but to be honest i have just ordered a replacement from sigma and the other retailer can have this one back. If i had wanted an unboxed one shoved roughly in a box i could have bought 2nd hand from ebay or facebook marketplace
What makes that tyre "second hand" ? (apart from not having the correct box). I had a Specialized tyre from a Specialized Concept Store sent like that a few weeks back, no issues.
Got to ask what were you going to do with the box? It's a tyre and going to get a lot more stress in use than being put in the wrong box!
Normally, I would expect the tyre so have a nylon strap holding it in the folded up position. I’ve had tyres delivered in that way, brown box, new looking tyre with strap.
one that was jammed and weirdly folded into a box and twisted
'weirdly folded' is pretty much how tyres are packaged - 'packaging' consists of what - folded up zip tied to a piece of card?. The retail packaging is there to help make folding tyres presentable on a shop display but they're not doing anything special to protect the tyre. Non folding tyres are just 'packaged' with a sticker.
The packaging is redundant for mailorder and the seller will have the choice of either buying in their tyres individually packaged for hanging on a rack or in a bale of 25 (never really understood why tyres are sold in odd numbers) and if the seller sells largely online why bother creating all that wasted store packaging?
I'd be worried if I ordered yoghurt and it turned up without its original packing, loose in a cardboard box, but a tyre less so 🙂
but to be honest i have just ordered a replacement from sigma and the other retailer can have this one back.
report back and let us know if that tyre is also turns up loose in a cardboard box!
Given all the problems that I've had with continental gp5000s being twisted, I'm not taking any chances with this one. I paid full retail for it and I really did expect to receive a retail package tire and not one that's twisted and folded
By the way, just to confirm these tires are 70 each... Therefore, I think I'm well within my rights to believe that if I order one for full price that it comes brand new and factory folded not just screwed up in a box. If any of the people above want to give me £70 for this tire, I'll sell it to you gladly. If you're quite happy to use them in that state for that price then please be my guest. If this was a cheapy £20 tire I really wouldn't care so much but this is meant to be a premium item
If I was in your position and paid full retail I’d be a bit miffed also for it to turn up without proper packaging. I called into Merlin last Friday after work to pick up a GP5000 that came out of the warehouse without any though, just the nylon strap to keep it unfolding. However I wasn’t bothered due to getting it for £52
Was it a nice cheap price or full retail?
If full retail price, I'd be unhappy, if it was cheap, I wouldn't be bothered as once fitted it should be fine.
Plenty shops selling unboxed stuff for lower prices, but they don't tend to arrive like they would if you went into a shop and picked it off the shelf.
Looks fine to me. It still has the mould mark down the centre line so I doubt it is "second hand" in that respect and they pretty much all look like that when initially unfolded.
You asked "am i being unreasonable to expect" you got some answers.
You got some reasons as to why you might be.
If you have had bad experiences with the tyres before why buy more?
You didn't try the tyre so don't know if there is anything wrong with it, so now going to cost the company more money to deal with it.
You didn't even use CAPS to rant...
Anyhow you bought it online so have the right to return it for a refund as long as its not been used and assuming you've not been stewing over this for the last 6 months. No need to ask the shop, it's the law innit.
If any of the people above want to give me £70 for this tire, I'll sell it to you gladly.
As well you know - you'd have to pay £1 for one of us to recycle it for you 😉
If I'd paid full retail* I'd expect the "proper" packaging. But I'd try to fit the tyre before complaining because there might not be an issue.
*Got a pair from Merlin, in the proper packaging, with a pair of inner tubes, for £100.
Yes,I think it's unreasonable to expect anyone to care after such a mild rant. 😉 🤣
I really hope the Sigma replacement is perfect, or there's going to be hell to pay 🙃
Should have ordered from here : https://www.bike-tyres.co.uk/
Prices seem good but I don't know whether it includes the box.
Did you pay full RRp or get it for a really good price?
Did you pay full RRp or get it for a really good price?
well i paid £65 which appears to be what most people are selling them for ( though its not the cheapest)
the vendor has come back stating that "Just to confirm we purchase the bulk of our tyres directly from the manufacturer in bulk as OEM products. We then re-package them to sell"
I thought OEM were meant to only be sold as part of a complete system ? its going back today - lets see what the other retailer sends through for a few pounds more

What's unreasonable is a pair of ruddy bike tyres costs £100.00!!! 🤣

If you think that's bad the RRP on Schwalbe MM Radials is around £80 per tyre, although obviously no one pays that. Still, average is around £65 each.
Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy tyres from ‘Bike Tyres’ simply because of their shit logo. Look at it, no I’m not.
Edit- bloke says to his his mate, I’m going to start a new business selling bike tyres.
Mate- awesome what’s the company name?
Bloke ‘bike tyres’
Mate- that’s a rubbish name you better have a cool logo with upside down letters and shit.
Bloke- yessssss!

Merlin per chance...?
That's a £90 tyre... You paid £65 for it... Something has to give somewhere, and here it's the packaging and the route to market (it has come OEM so has missed out a UK distributor)...
I could sit and write yet another essay about customers expectations driving unreasonable retail behaviour within the bicycle industry, and all the businesses that have gone pop as a direct or indirect result recently... But instead I'll just ask you to think about which is more important to you... The £25 saving, or it coming in a box?
Well, looking on the continental website, it actually clearly states that there is a difference between the OEM and retail versions of the tires. So to be honest I don't care if it's in a box or not in a box. I do care if it's retail or OEM. If on on the website they had clearly listed that it was an oem tire and not a retail. I wouldn't have purchased it
And as for saying, somehow it's my fault because I chose the cheaper option..... That's quite some stretch.

Exactly, I couldn't care less about the packaging or company logo as long as the product is okay and the price is right.
Paying extra for a box is literally throwing money in the bin, the box will be in the recycling 5 minutes after fitting the tyre!
I'm buying a GP5000 tyre soon, anybody want to buy the box? One careful owner...... £12.50 🤣
Not sure I’d risk ordering from that tyres website. They only have about 5 products and the picture for the GP5000S TR is of the GP5000 . Cheap they may be but…
🙄 was going to add a screenshot to demonstrate but surprise surprise the image upload is broken.
I bought some vee crown gems (24") they came folded and taped and stuffed into a poly bag. (They're yet to be fitted) I'm sure they'll be grand. I've had cassettes loose.
Looking at your picture Quentyn, those tyres look fine. I'd be taking the saving, return hassle and time and fitting them and getting on with life.

Thanks all for the comments. I sent it back today as if you read one of the previous thread that I posted around having a buckled wheel. Some of the people on that thread were completely right that whilst the wheel was slightly buckled it was the tire that was twisted that was causing the problem. Given OEM tire due to ithe packaging was completely twisted in the box. I would prefer to have one that's been folded properly from the factory that at least has a better chance being straight. Up to about 55 km an hour a slightly wobbly tire doesn't seem to have any difference but the instant you get past about 70 kph that's like wobble can cause brown trousers
Obviously some of you are probably more willing to tolerate poor quality tires than I am....
You can't say it's poor quality.
Obviously some of you are probably more willing to tolerate poor quality tires than I am....
Not sure we are, but quality nowadays means paying a higher price. You seem to have bought something at a bargain price, as pointed out, things will have been cheapened (like folded in an unmarked package).
Saying that, I hate paying full retail price for tyres (I remember when the good tyres were £25 each and you could get a Smoke and Dart combo for £35!), so I try and buy some when they are on a clearance offer or sale...
I do agree with you though, quality is important (but it does come at a price).
Obviously some of you are probably more willing to tolerate poor quality tires than I am....
Yet you got the same tyre that apparently has had problems and don't trust without a bit of coloured cardboard, there's a bit of a flaw with your logic.

Do you actually read and process what anybody on here writes...? Or is it all just noise to feed your confirmation bias?
I asked you to consider what is important to you... You have the same product as you would have got in a retail box... You paid £25 less than rrp for it, but it didn't come in a box... So which is more important to you? The box, or the £25 in your pocket?
The phrase "cheap, light, strong, pick two" is often attributed to Tom Ritchey, and here I'm going to amend it to "cheap, aftermarket, high performance, pick two" as it's a little more relevant to how most customers buy their products these days... You simply can't have your cake AND to eat it... If you want it in a box (it's the same product, I promise you), then be prepared to pay a premium for the box (and the extra distribution step, and the extra warranty and back up that comes with it)... If the price is more important still once everything else is considered, then shut up and stop complaining! You're well within your rights to buy another tyre for a cheaper rrp that (let's face it) is still going to be more than good enough for pretty much anybody short of Tadej Pogacar anyway...
