Rightio, I have found a little used ibis mojo frame for £950 inc a hope headset and the colour and links i would like. This would be the most money I have ever spent on anything, having not bought a car as I am only a student. Basically I had money set aside for possibly buying a car this summer however with the cost of buying/running and insurance all very expensive atm I was put off. I have been looking for a new frame and always dreamt of getting something worth this amount. I would love to have the bike, but obviously being a student it is nice to have cash set aside. So, am slightly unsure as to what to do and would appreciated peoples opinions.

Cheers Guys

Not if you enjoy it. Is it the one in The Bike Chain perchance?

Ha good guess 🙂 I have been in speaking to the guys in there, seems like a great deal and I would be getting an easton ec90 post to go with it, everything else would be getting swapped from my bike as it is.

in 20 years time you will remember that bike andn ot how much it cost you to buy. Money gets tight you could just sell it so win win situation IMHO

I am not a finacial adviser 😉

Get yourself a cheap commuting bike too and the car can wait til whenever...

Many of us on here would much rather ride than drive anyway but dont have the choice due to kids etc.

You need to be 100% certain when spending this sort of cash.
It is a used frame - others do come up regularly. Don't rush it.

tbc - Yeah i m going to make sure i think this one through fully, i know i would be delighted if i got it and after a few months of riding it would be more than happy with what I would have paid for it.

Mate of mine managed to get himself a hardhip loan while at uni. The are very strict about such things, many hoops to ump through before getting one. Got £500, deided that he wasn't likely to have that much in a lump sum again any time soon so blew £200 on a Hope C2 brake (this was 2002ish). Top marks to him.

You know the huge bags of pasta that tescos do for about £1? He lived entirely off that for the last three weeks of term...

Don't rush it, but don't beat yourself up about it.

As long as you use it and can justify it to yourwself, who cares what anyone else thinks!

I assume you don't have kids, a mortgage, etc etc. Before long you will have responsibilities that could very well stop you doing this...

But first be sure you'll be able to survive the rest of uni having bought it!!!!!!

I've just blown 1200 on a used bottlerocket - don't really need it but I've always wanted one, you can't take it with you and if it gives you pleasure why not??

Cheers guys, I think I am beginning to come to a concluding answer, I feel that if I dont get a frame now I will have to get one in the next year or so anyway, and would probably end up spending even more money on it with this being a good deal.

Thanks for all the input and will let you all know what happens.

It depends where you live, and what sort of access to trails you have. Many years ago I built up a 6" bike that was essentially a dh bike, with nowhere suitable to ride it. And no car to get anywhere. It quickly became a complete bore on my local trails, so I sold it.

If you've got plenty of mates to ferry you about, or plenty of trails on your door step then go for it. If not I would get a cheaper frame, and keeps saving for a car. Getting a car was the best thing that ever happened to my mountain biking. The mojo is lovely I'm sure, but it probably won't make you any happier than a similar alloy giant /spesh etc. But...it's your money.

I get regular access to glentress and innerleithen on wednesdays with the uni mtb club and am only a half hour ride from the pentlands so could go out whenever I wanted to when down at uni. When I am at home, I am in the Highlands so basically ride out the door into some nice parts of singletrack and have the highland wildcat and redrock a half hour drive away which is ok seen as i tend to get a lift with the old man anyway, esp as he works in Golspie.

I'd get the bike rather than a car. Cars just seem to cost more and more to run. A touch under £70 to fill up the other day. And that'll only last a couple of weeks. That could have bought me a set of flash/flare for commuting. Now, there's an idea... 'we can't use the car as I bought lights instead of petrol. We'll have to go in yours'. 🙂

Try the Moneysavingexpert.com mantra

Mmmm. looks like you can afford it and you're likely to use it. 😀

You will always remember your first car fondly when you look back but with that amount to spend you could remember for the wrong reasons!

There are plenty of good cars out there for that much money but plenty that are crap. One big repair could mean you never use it again or end up broke paying for it. Factor in insurance which will probably be as much as the car and fuel and it'll cost a hell of a lot.

If you can do without a car I'd suggest the bike. Being Edinburgh based I'd suggest you probably won't need one during term time but know what it can be like in the Highlands without transport in the summer!

Don't envy anyone getting their first car now and I only got mine 11 years ago! Flip side is the 2nd hand bikes available at reasonable money now is fantastic.

My (not so) old frame, I guess? It has been looked after, I promise.
Really nice, and fun to ride, sort of wish I'd kept it..

I nearly bought a 2nd hand Mojo frame a while so back, just after the distribution switched to 2pure. At the time 2pure told me they would offer no support at all in the event of any problems.
However it seems from mtbr that Ibis back their products, even secondhand- loads of rave review re customer service on there- you just need to go direct ot them. Of course 2pure might have changed their stance since- they've been really good each time I've had to deal with them.

this is what makes a good bike shop great, good honest advice. Mark's approach would be one of the plus points for buying the frame, he's in it for the long haul and the love, not just for a quick profit

TBC i salute you!

I love the Mojo, but personally I'd spend half that on a new frame and then the other half on a biking holiday. Southern Spain perhaps. Mmm. I guarantee those memories will be better than owning a Mojo

...assuming you earned all that cash the hard way and you're not about to blow taxpayer's money 😉

Cheers vinneyh it certainly is a very nice frame.
Not the taxpayer's money in anyway at all and the family mtb holiday is already booked for this summer so that box can be ticked 😀

Not the taxpayer's money

Do what you want with it then 😆

Joking aside, FWIW, I spent a load of money at Uni on hi-fi (inheritance, not student loan). Looking back now, the "stuff" didn't matter and the best memories are things like messing around Caley Crags on my old Hard Rock and trying my first bit of cyclo-cross on my Dad's old home made road bike (and stumbling upon the Emmerdale set).

So, again, I'd plump for a cheaper frame and book another holiday 😀

Do it! Don't buy a car - I wish I didn't have one these days. Biggest waste of money unless you REALLY need one. I get a tear in my eye thinking of all the holidays and fun stuff I could have done had I not forked out £200 a year in road tax, £300 a year insurance, MOT etc etc. As a student I could never had afforded a car if I was not able to fix it and service it myself and if I was getting my first car now with current insurance I would have been even worse off.

Oh and seeing as though the original owner is on here maybe he has the receipt still in case of any problems? He is your Uncle Vinnyeh and it was a present 😀

IMHO that is way too much bike for the Pentlands, and a bit too much for most of GT.

Unless you are super gnarr, or need it to compete in races, you may find it doesn't really enhance your riding that much.

I don't know what bike you have at the moment, but you may consider that it would be better to keep that / service it / upgrade bits, rather than sink a pile of cash into a S/H carbon frame that may or may not last you, with a bunch of old swapped over components that again may or may not last.

And also IMHO £1000 isn't enough to run a car. Figure £400 a year MOT / Service, £100 a month fuel, £whatever insurance, £180 a year tax, plus the initial cost of the car. At least £2000 a year plus the cost of the car...

If that's your savings, I'd advise sitting on them right now, and possibly using it as a need rather than a want expenditure (rainy day).

Cheers guys for all the input, I have just come of the phone with Colin in The Bike Chain and have decided to go for the frame 😀 I have spent alot of time (last night and all day today) deciding what I was going to do, pros and cons of buying/not buying this frame. I felt that the pros to buying this frame and having it over the frame that I have already would help my riding and make myself more confident when out on rides. I understand it is a lot of money to spend on a bike frame but it is just the way I want it once they have put some nice red links on it from 2 pure, I have also been told that they are selling it with a warranty which fills me with a more confidence even though there has been very few breakage's of this mojo. I am buzzing now to get it all built up however it won't be until Easter that i get to do so, but I will post some pics up here for you all to see.

Many Thanks

Just to let you know I'm a student as well (fairly poor one too).

If I had that sort of extra money lying around I wouldn't buy that ibis thing you're after.

Not when the bmx needs new wheels, and I could upgrade the mtb to 10 speed, and maybe get some carbon handlebars for the road bike......

Enjoy it 😀

Cheers Realman, well this is my only bike tbh, and bit a of a do it all though. My road bike cost me all of £10 to get up on the road and works just fine for getting me to uni and back each day.
I have had the money set aside for when I wanted to get a car but with the massive increase in prices that won't be for at least another 2/3 years so i feel that it will be worht it in the long run seen as I would have been needing a new frame in the next year anyway.
Thanks

If it was me, I wouldn't do it. You've already highlighted the reason:

i mite come up with some new ideas to make it more exciting.

Which I read as 'I'll blow all my spare cash on this frame and then get myself in trouble trying to buy all the parts that it deserves'.

It is a lovely frame, but it won't ride much better than a £300 alloy hardtail. If you NEED a new frame, get one, but don't blow your cash on something pretty. Things can get tricky when you're a student and having that money stashed could come in really useful (think still being able to afford to go to uni).

I had a proper rat-bike when I was a student, but still enjoyed every minute of riding it, and that's what counts.
