I've used giro helmets for a few years now, tried a fox flux on a while ago and didn't like the fit , tried a giro feature on Today and am now saving for one to replace my xen.

I really liked my Flux. In most ways it's not that good- it's heavy, bulky, and the straps aren't great, and I hate the stupid wing- pulled it off. But despite that, it all just works, really felt strapped round my head not on it, and the coverage was great.

(the Striker is a much better helmet but doesn't have quite the coverage- still better than most though.)

Giro Feature is definitely worth checking out, I'd have one of those if it fit. They seem like great helmets and they're bargainy too.

Got a POC Trabec Race, came from a Giro Hex.

POC is really comfy and doesn't get too hot with the added benefit of great coverage without looking like a mushroom. Amazon have them for just over £90 depending on your sizing!

Giro Feature. Light, surprisingly good venting, surprisingly cheap, fits me great. Had bought a Flux the day before but it just didn't fit my head shape well enough, so took it back, went hat hunting and found the Feature was right for me. I need a hat I can shrink enough after a haircut and then let out a fair few clicks over the coming months until I'm shorn again.

661 Recon is a perfect fit for me and a good looking lid to boot.

Just got a Giro Feature. Wore it for the first time on Tuesday, forgot I was wearing it. LBS did it for £53 which I was happy with but I've seen them for £10 less online, absolute bargain. I got the black ano/green blockade which is actually clear with a pattern on the rear RHS so the shell shows through in a carbon fibre for pikeys sort of way. Being a bit of a pikey I like it.

picked up a feature online for 40 quid shipped last week. came from a hex.
seems like a nice lid, more protection than the hex round the back, and for me a better fit. remains to be seen how effective the vents are given its about 0degrees round here at the mo.

Got both a Poc Trabec MIPS and a Giro Feature. Both great helmets! The Feature reminds me of a stripped back Xen, extremely comfy from the moment you pop it on your head. The Feature is a little bit warm though... The Trabec is a little more finicky - the adjustment buckles in particular are a little bit old school. Feels a little less plush when you first put it on, but then once on and riding is cool, comfortable and unnoticeable in the right way. I also think it looks better than the Feature. The Feature reminds me a little of an open face motorbike helmet and the Trabec is more like my old Xen in looking like a 21st century, fit for purpose MTB helmet.

I've tried loads of lids over the past year, the Urge All mountain is my currant fav, the fit is perfect and its well vented, however I'm tempted by the Giro feature and also the Troy Lee A1 which is out next month. The Scott Watu looks good for £30 too!!

Anyone used Kali helmets? Never heard of them until they were on Sport Pursuit a few weeks ago - looked quite good.

I tried on one at Freeborn bikes in Horsham the other day, would suite someone with a very round head

Got a POC race in the post to replace my ancient Xen, but really, the Xen is still one of the best looking and fitting MTB helmets ever made. Classic design.

Got a Giro Feature - most comfy helmet I've ever worn and the fit for me is superb. Once on and adjusted I can shake my head upside down with the chin strap undone and it stays firmly in place. Don't even notice it when riding - no pressure points etc.

It's light too - so light I leave my helmet light and battery attached to it now day or night.

I have a Giro Feature and a Bell Variant.

I'm on my second Variant after I wrote the first one off in a crash (ie it did what it was supposed to)

Both would be fine for what you want.

I prefer the Feature for the reasons stated above (fit, security, etc) but the Variant is better vented and is also much easier to fit lights to.

Has to be said you can find Features for under 40quid these days which makes them ridiculously good VFM.

POC Trabec Race arrived today. Conforms to all the stuff I've read. Initially it looked really weird on. After a couple of minutes it started to make sense. The build quality is a good step ahead of the Xen it's replacing too (no mean feat). Fit is excellent and it feels light. Removing the peak gives the helmet a great Xtreme sports vibe. Love it!

In terms of safety? It clearly looks like a very protective helmet. Only one way to find out...

Here are some up-themselves Rapha-style images to s**** at, complete with Top Gear style labels left attached.

😉

Oh, and the tutorial movie in this thread:

...has a couple of POC Trabecs being used. Gnarly. Probably.

Uvex XP100.

Light, well-vented, comfortable, uncommon, black, cheap.

I quite liked my Feature when I first bought it but it's deteriorated in the space of a year or so. Apart from the feeble strap/buckle which refuses to stay put the pads have started to compress & de-laminate.

Bought a giro feature and pleased with it so far, light, fits well and good all round protection, but as others say try before you buy, everyone has a different shaped nogin!

Love my Urge AM. Very comfortable and seems well vented (not tried it in summer yet).
It is expensive, but I got for an Xmas pressie 🙂

I've got a Specialized Tactic. At the cheaper end of the market at £55, but so far, so good.

the main problem I found was finding shops where I could actually go in and try a helmet on. I found Giro's wobble on my head, and I found the POC really uncomfortable. The Tactic is good for my large, but slightly narrow head.

Definatley try before you buy.....

Too true. I bought a catlike whisper (the helmet with all the finger holes in it), but no matter what size I tired it wouldn't fit. Thinking back to my Xen, I couldn't get comfortable in it until I'd embedded the rear adjustments into the foam. Met seem to have a good fitting system, and the POC is a perfect fit because of the adjustment design. Problem is that so few shops carry a good range of helmets. My old trick is to order a couple from Amazon and send one back (unused with the labels still on of course). They're really good like that.

I started a related thread month ago which had some good comments:
http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/am-full-face-helmet

Question is whether a FF however open/well ventilated is want you'd want for your AM riding.

661 Recon here.

Just felt like I wanted a bit more protection at the back.

Tried a few on, and it fits my massive head well.

Anyone got a lid they'd recommend that's a similar fit to a Hex? Mine's getting a bit worse for wear and the finish wasn't great (not very smooth boundary between the hard shell and the foam), very very comfy though, I can easily wear it all day. Might just end up with the same again, although it does look like bit of a mushroom on my massive head. Like the look of the 661 Recon and last year's Xar, anyone had either of these and a Hex?
