Looks like I might have to change my whole drivechain, always had XT, but should I switch to Sram? Never had it and fancy giving it a go. What is the equivalent to 1x11 XT?
I've always had Shimano as well and always wondered what the benefits and consequences of each are.
I spent decades on Shimano. Then I went Sram. Now happily back with Shimano. I found SRAM a bit heavy in action and replacement parts were crazy money.
I always had Shimano, recent road and mtb came with SRAM and really like it.
You would need an XD drive body which is another expense to think about...
I would say GX or X1 would be where to look, I've got a mix of both on my MTB.
Cheers, Steve
I'd always had shimano on mtb till 2014, then SRAM as shimano weren't down with [s]the kids[/s] 1x11 I've had/built 6 mtb a since, all SRAM 1x11, all worked perfectly.
Still 100% shimano on road bikes though.

'Soon my dear, soon'
I'd mix and match a little. I dislike SRAM shifters, but I'd happily run a SRAM XD driver and cassette, they're good kit. Especially with the option of a 10t smallest cog.
Yes gears. No brakes
Although a friend of mine has new sram brakes.still new but pretty good.
I always used to like SRAM but swapped over a couple of years ago. The shimano stuff is better built, works better (Esp the brakes) and cheaper...
Best idea us to try each. XT8000 shifters have quite a different feel to previous generations. I'm happy with it but you might not be.
Why not both? If you want 1x with a big cassette then Shimano's cassettes aren't really competitive except at the bottom end but the shifting is worth checking out. So I went XT shifting, and an X01 cassette. (there's some good prices on cassettes just now, worth checking amazon). TBH, the shifter feel isn't really what I like but it still seems a good balance of price and performance.
I prefer most Shimano shifters - nice and light action, easier button placement. I still run rapid rise on my bike, and will miss it when I change in the spring. It just works and works. Last three bikes with SRAM on have all had shifters that get sticky (all x7 or X9), and no amount of cleaning and lubing gets them back working well. Both shimano and SRAM mechs seem to last a good while - but SRAM mechs succumb to sticky jockey wheels more often. SRAM springs last longer in mechs.
Brakes - Shimano is my go to brakes for the oab household, however I personally don't like the 'sharp' initial bite they offer - so much so I changed over to Magura and love them - if anything they are marginally more powerful, with lovely feed in of power. Shimano brakes seem to last a few years, and then just 'loose it'. I have binned three sets in the last year through thier inability to stop a bike.
What is it about Shimano that's not working/you don't like?
If it's not broken don't fix it IMO
I jumped from shimano to sram when the old xtr shifters went from metal paddles to plastic!!!! And I find all there stuff very plasticky!!! Sram is better shifting, and much more robust, to me I get what I pay for and generally run X1, XO1, XX1 mix on both bikes.
i have sram and shimano on both MTB and road so one of each has one of those
No real difference in operation though SRAM is a little clunkier
If i was to replace i would make a price based decision and get the cheaper set up as they are basically equivalent IMHO
Looks like I will stick with Shimano as the pricing is much much better. Sram just seems really expensive.
I recently made the change. I like the SRAM, but I do miss the trigger of the shimano shifter.
To be honest I think they are both good, so whilst very nice I'd say that SRAM probably isn't worth the extra money.
Brakes are a different matter, my guides are miles better to use than the XTs I had.
I run sram cassette and chain, along with Shimano slx for the rest. I find the sram cassette and chains longer lasting and better value
Got GX on the trail bike and XT 10sp on the XC bike. Overall much prefer the GX, also run twist grip shift which is awesome and no shimano option for that. Generally get good life from my SRAM gear and the performance is great. Prices are what they are, never struggled to get a good price on stuff and for you lot with £'s it's all going to go up.
Shimano on the MTB. Road bike came with SRAM and I was worried how well it would hold up. So far it's done 4000 miles and is starting it's second winter of commuting. Its holding up remarkably well seeing as the chain is black thanks to my caring maintenance regime!
I really like the SRAM shifting, but having had everything from Juicy sevens to XX brakes go wrongful the time, I run Shimano brakes as they just work. KMC chains are they are the mutts nutz
Road bike Cross bike Campag
SRAM for cassettes, Shimano everything else here. Just don't like SRAM shifters at all personally
