The GF is interested in a Garmin for her bike, does not need anything too techy as such so are there nay good alternatives that are cheaper or are they the "go-to" devices?

Less of a "go-to" device, more that they have no serious competition. Which I have always seemed odd.

On the plus side, it has allowed them to get away with producing shite software/firmware for the last x years.

Just get her a Edge 200.

Been very happy with my Bryton 35t but now bought a Garmin that I'm yet to try.

I have a Mio 505 GPS unit. Its not cheap but Mio do make other units as do Garmin.
The Mioshare website is easy to use seems stable enough. Like Garmin Connect (i believe) it can take a little practise to get the hang of planning a route as it will try to route you in some strange ways - until you realise that Mio's definition of a 'major road' and yours can be two different things!
It has WiFi so no need to physically connect your unit to the PC to upload tracks/download routes, just sync with WiFi & its done.
It doesn't accommodate OS mapping though so not as good off-road as a Garmin, but i didn't buy it for that. It uses open source mapping for off road stuff but i haven't yet used it for an off road trek so can't comment on how effective it is in use.
For road work its great, decent size screen, easy to follow instructions & reliable.

What exactly does she want? GPS? Route finding? Or just a bike computer?

If she's just after a GPS computer, Cateye Stealth 10? There's also a model that does ANT+ if that matters.

Cheers, she's looking for a GPS tracker that's not on a phone. The bike computer I gave her she had difficulty with... 😕

I was going to suggest Cateye. I've not used them but their stuff is usually well made.

I might be in the market for something like this for a powercal.
