You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've been looking around for a while now trying to find the bike i'll probably be purchasing next year and i think i've started to confuse myself. My criteria is..
Light - Sub 30lbs
140 / 140 travel (can be a bit flexible either way here)
Reasonable reach and a bit slack (66.5 HA or less)
The Jeffsy seems like the best value and is highly regarded but the geometry is now looking a bit dated (i'm hoping they tweak it next year) and too similar to my On One Codeine . Other options seam either too pricey (Santa Cruz, Pivot, Intense, Yeti) or too heavy (Orange, anything "enduro") the Specialized Stumpjumper looks OK but they have put a lesser fork on the £3,500 model and you have to pay £5k just to get a Pike.
What am i missing???
Whyte S150
Bird AM9
Cotic FlareMAX
You'd struggle to get a FlareMax under 30lb. Mine is 32lb (all up, including pedals) with Pike, GX Eagle, Hope/Arch wheels etc. So, I guess it's possible, but you'd either have ro spend a bunch or compromise the bike.
Whyte S150
Bird AM9
Cotic FlareMAX
The Bird and Cotic both look a bit heavy.
The Whyte S150C RS looks nice though. Thats now on the list, Cheers
In a recommend what you own, the Orbea Rallon is pretty ace.
I think there is a new Giant Trance 29'er which is well liked by the reviewers.
Is the Rose Root Miller in this bracket?
I went from a Codeine to a Banshee Prime and I love it, mines just under 31lbs, but lighter wouldn't be hard.
I bought mine as an ex-demo frame which was a lot cheaper than new.

AM9 is a bit ‘enduro’ isn't it? I was considering it alongside my Capra

Yes, my cup runneth over when looking for 29r Enduro bikes. Thats not what i'm after, i want something in the LT / Trail / AM category (although these terms now seem rarely used).
Just because I own a Jeffsy I’d relook at one.
HA 67 degree with flip chip on low and 66.5 degree with my 150 Pikes. Rides great.
for £30 you can knock another half degree off with offset bushings too.
great value after all.
ps I would say the guide weight on YT webpage is slightly ambitious if you have a large or XL. My XL carbon with XT bits, hope wheels and Pikes weighs in at 14.2kg so 32lbs or so.
Isn’t the Whyte s-150 as enduro as an AM9? Both have the same travel and are quite slack. I’d imagine with nice bits you could get the AM9 around 30lbs.
My Aeris 145 is around 32lbs with DT Swiss e1900 wheels / Lyriks / brand x seatpost / 2.5 tyres / Guides / gx 11 speed etc. If you got some light wheels / pikes / higher groupset / lightener dropper etc I reckon you’d get to around 30lbs.
A Jeffsy with 150 pikes sounds about right if i sized up. But they dont sell em with 150 pikes and i'm trying to compare stock bikes. Good to know the YT weights are that ambitious - may be giving me a bum steer.
Isn’t the Whyte s-150 as enduro as an AM9?
Yes, on further inspection i suppose it is. And the BB height is very low so i'd be pedal striking loads on tech climbs.
This isnt easy is it???
Nothing is ever easy!
What’s your budget?
Buy stock Jeffsy and sell new forks and get pikes?
Propain Hugene. The Start model is well specced, although from memory it may be a little steep in the HA for your preference.

You're really going to struggle with sub-30 lbs on a ~140 travel 29er
My pretty blinged out Hightower (carbon frame, wheels, cranks, bars, XX1/XTR mix) is 30 lbs on the nose. That's a genuine weight taken in the bike shop with pedals and everything. Though it is an XL frame and I guess an X2 shock and Vault pedals are going to up the weight a touch compared to what is possible.

Yes i think your right. My "real world" Codeine 29 weighs 33lbs but i have fond memories of my 28lb Yeti 575 26 with 36s. I just find the Codeine a bit cumbersome even though i love the 29r wheels.
Looking as well.
so far the rallion (bit too pricy for me if im honest) is a winner. great up and down and FAST
next up its the stumpy but the font end is really high.
I wouldnt say the AM9 is that heavy. A full enduro build maybe 32lbs, budget enduro build 33lbs, but we did a 145 the other week (which is identical weight save around 400g for the 29'er ness in the wheels & tyres and a few g more in the frame) and that was 12.76kg/28.2 lbs. High end obviously but the point being that you can get the weight down and it could have been lighter without the 2.5/2.6 tyres and a few other savings here and there. I think the top end Jeffsy 27 vs ours is about 300g difference on that build. Not sure on the 29ers but I would suspect its not wildly different.
Trek Fuel 29.
They are 130/130 as stock, but plenty of people run 140mm forks on them, as the plus bike comes with a 140mm fork as stock. Others (me included) run a 150 & remove the spacer in the shock to make it ~138mm travel in the back.
It's longer, lower & slacker than the Jeffsy. If you don't like a low BB though, it might not be for you. Light though, my 9.9 is under 30lbs with a coil shock on it & a 36 on the front (hardly what one could consider a budget build though!)
Ben - So for example whats the real world weight of the AM9 X01/XX1 in Large?
The one I have right here?
X01
hope Hubs/481 30mm rims
Aggressor 2.3 r & 2.5 f
Reverb 170
Deluxe Shock
Lyrik RC2 150mm
800m Next R bars
Turbine R Stem
Fabric Scoop Elite Saddle
Descendent Carbon DUB cranks & BB
Code RSC Brakes 180/200 rotors
31.8 lbs/14.4 kg. Thats an ML but you're talking just 10s of g to go to L.
And these two....
Mine on the left, which I've had since April, and a mates which was delivered on Friday. Both are large frames.
My one is 31lbs with 36 Float RC2, CCDB Air CS, 1x11 XT drivetrain, XX1 carbon cranks, KS Lev 175mm carbon dropper, SDG Circuit saddle, 30mm LB carbon rims on Hope Pro2 hubs, 900-950g-ish tyres, Formula R0 brakes, Bonty 780mm alloy bars.
Mates is around 32lbs…spec is Lyrik RC2, RS Deluxe shock, 1x11 XT drivetrain, Race Face alloy cranks, RF alloy bars, XT pedals, Hope Enduro wheels, Maxxis DHF & Aggressor DD, RF Aeffect dropper, XT brakes.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 30lb limit, it's a pretty arbitrary weight cut off and you may exclude some decent bikes due to it. It's the kind of thinking that leads companies to put cheap, awful light weight tyres on their bikes so they have an artificially low weight.
Anyway, with regards suggestions, how about a Canyon Spectral? I also like the look of the Marin B17, but that might not quite match your criteria.
I went from a Codeine 32-33 lb to a Starling Murmur 30lb ish which is bloody luvly .
