As great as Impact Lo's are they seem to take days to dry out after you get caught out in the rain. Taking them off after a ride yesterday they felt like they'd doubled in weight because they'd absorbed so much water.

Can anyone recommend any alternatives that are a little less sponge like and perhaps a little more splash proof? I quite like the look of Shimano MP66's but I'm a bit concerned that the sole might be a bit too stiff and that they might not offer quite as much protection from rocks or as much grip on the sole for when you're hike a biking it.

Thanks

or, get stealth rubber soles stuck onto your favorite action sandals:

Shimano AM40s. Mine don't even seem to let any water in, let alone need to dry out. Genuinely brilliant bits of cycling kit.

the MP66 has a cleat plate in and is much stiffer than the impact low (I have both) and I personally wouldnt want to use the MP66 on flatties.

The AM40 looks like the same upper as the MP66 but with a softer flattie-specific sole.

I'm keeping my Impacts for summer (optimistic!) and just using an old pair of Vans for wet flattie riding.

the am40 is not even nearly the same as the mp66

there used to be a flat pedal version of the mp66 but in black whose number escapes me (I still have a pair)

the am40 has a vibram sole (that will get trashed by flat pedals)

but they look like stormstooper shoes shoes so they win.

What about 5.10 Freeriders?

Or these, Chase Phantom

Want to try a pair on myself, but no one seems to stock them!

Shimano AM40s are very good. Not as mentally grippy as 5.10, but still grippy enough. Slimmer, so you can move your feet around more on the pedals. You also get a 'sole stiffener' which you can use to tune the feel of the shoe on the pedal if you want. You get wet feet with all shoes, but these dry quicker than 5.10s.

5-10s aren't made as well as shimano - I have a pair of those so called "freeriders" and they aren't glued together to well, they are falling to bits on me in fact (I'll only wear them in dusty trails, and thats few and far between)

i got these to replace my impacts. They are mesh so get wet but dry out quickly. Much cooler in the summer. Far more comfortable for all day stuff / push sections. Grip to 95% of the impacts (same rubber but different sole design, not quite as flat) and look far less "orthapedic" than the impacts. Plus they are cheap!! I like them so much i also ordered these:

I'm happy with my adidas berms. http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/clothing/shoes/product/berm-shoes-29247. Not sure if they've stopped making them, but there seem to be some good deals about if you've got small feet.

bol... have you used any other shoes other than you're berms? I only ask because I have used a fair few different shoes and I think that the berms are useless!!

I like my 5:10's but the AM40's are better, for me. They last better, dry faster, grip just as well (I can't feel any difference) and the closer over the laces is great. I've not tried the new 5:10 freeriders, purely because I have bought another set of AM40's because I think that they're that good.

EDIT: And that hole in the bottom of the sole on the Berms? You can almost hear the conversation in the design room. "Hey, my feet are wet", "OK, lets put a hole in the bottom to let the water out", "Coooool"

My Berms are sitting by the front door and are so full of spiders that I'm afraid to wear them again. No loss!

its more durable than the sole on shimano shoes in my experience
just get a shoe with the wrap around sole, not the flat stick on one (in the pics above, marzocchis have a wraparound, freeriders flat)
