Looking for some grippy flat pedal shoes for my daughter to practice skills on. I know 5-10 are good, but a bit pricey as she does all her real riding on SPD.
Any cheaper alternatives around?

Something like Vans skater shoes will be just as grippy, if not more. They're not as stiff though and soak water up like a sponge

Any skate shoes will be fine, they're just a bit bendy for long rides and not quite as sticky when you're pinning in downhill in the wet.

nike mogan are my favourite. can usually be found at nike outlet stores for around 20 quid if not less.

just as grippy as 5:10 in my experience.... mate has a pair of 5:10 and they were not any grippier than the nikes. look for the ones with the waffle sole on them:

my GF has one pink pair and a purple pair. tbh, i'm a little jealous. mone are black green....

Nothing grip like 5 10 soles

Been using 5 10, Nike 6.0, vans, etnies, orchid, DC, airwalk, etc for years on mtb and bmx for years.

Not the same at all...

Teva links are pretty good, or Teva Pinner.

After 5 10 my goto shoe is always vans - the waffle sole just works with pedal pins

Other brands like Vans, Teva, Sombrio, Giro are grippy, but nothing compares to 5:10.

Before I bought my 5-10's I was happy with any cheap flat soled skate type shoe from TK-Max/etc (which I also still prefer for BMX).

Last time I was in they had some dirt cheap Airwalk shoes which would be perfect for learning the skills... ie put your foot in the right place and you don't need the grip of a 5-10.

+1 for more 'generic' skate/BMX shoes from Vans, Etnies, Element, Nike 6.0 etc*. They're just not as stiff or grippy, the stiffness is probably more important, you can improve grip with longer pins. go to a shop and try them though as some are much stiffer than others. Also I found orthopedic/sports insoles worked wonders for stiffening trainers up, they do cost as much as some trainers though (£25+ in Boots), but do outlast several pairs!

*Airwalk are good if you can get them imported from the USA, the UK ones are licenced and made by/for sports direct and a bit crap.

I've been wearing vans on the bike for about 30 years from bmx through to full sus never had a problem. Check if there is a vans outlet near you, I got most of mine from Cheshire Oaks but down south now so will need to try Portsmouth in future. They have end of line and samples in different colours for anything between £5 and £40.

Don't obsess about grip- nothing else has as much grip as a 5 10 but that's OK because you don't need that much grip anyway. Lots of shoes provide more than enough
