My bike (a Whyte 901) has a 1x11 setup with a 30 tooth chain ring.    I'm finding it too easy to spin out top gear and I hardly ever use the two big ones at the back so my idea is fit a bigger front chain ring,  The question is do i go to 32 or 34 teeth?

Also might i need a longer chain?

If you hardly ever use the biggest two then I'd go 34.  You'll probably need another link (in theory 4 teeth = 1 more link) but you might get away without.  If the chain is new(ish) I'd run it like it is unless it is visibly too short when you swap the chainring and then pop a longer one on when you change chains.

Cheers, chain rings are only £17 (steel) each so i might get a 34 and see how it goes.

I’ve got a 34t front with an 11-42 cassette on my hardtail and it’s generally ok. Ridden cwmcarn once with it and the rest local riding without running out of gears.

I ride similar stuff on my Fs bike which has a 30t front and 10-42 cassette and I very much need the 30t.

I think I’d go 34 from your 30t to get a significant difference - especially if you are spinning out the 11 a lot at the moment. Presume that’s mostly on fireroads or roads?
