We're planning a 7-9 day summer trip to the Alps: never ridden there .... so the question is should we stay in Verbier for the whole holiday or is it worth spending a few days in Morzine (or any other suggestion?).

It will be my son and myself riding, girls will go for walks. We both ride BPW red trails comfortably, but we don't 'send' big drops or jumps.

We have family in Verbier, so free accomodation there!

I've been to both. The bike park in Verbier itself is pretty good with options for big drops etc. I've heard the singletrack trails are amazing but I didn't stay long enough to sample them. I think hiring a guide to show you around might be the best option.
Morzine is really good but some of the tracks are quite blown out but plenty of them.
If I had free accommodation I'd spend it all in Verbier but that's just my 2p.

Both are excellent - typically we spend a week in Morzine and do a day trip to Verbier. Verbier has a great new flow trail which has about a million berms in it. So much fun. If you can get across to Morzine for a day or two.

Been to both I would go for Verbier, even if I was paying for accommodation, unless you are a dh rider with a dh bike, we love the place, if you want a change of scene Pila in  the Aosta Valley is only a couple of hours drive over the St Bernard's pass so a day trip if you wanted to!!

Thanks, we only have trail bikes, so seems like Verbier might be the best option, we can always do a day trip to Morzine etc!

Been to Morzine a good few times, been to Verbier once. I wouldn't go back to Morzine having been to other spots all of which seem better. As stated above, trails in Morzine were always in shocking condition with braking bumps. Not an issue on a DH bike but really bad on a Trail bike. It's been 10+ years since I've been there so maybe they've upped their game. Only neg about Verbier is the accommodation price even in Summer (when it's dirt cheap in Morzine), not an issue for you though. Both resorts have pretty poor evening buzz about them (empty bars etc), so one isn't better than the other from that perspective. We spent 4 days in Verbier, only really scratched the surface of what's there. Oh, and in Verbier there's no issue going mtbing on the walking trails so a big range of trail options. Be careful with lift opening though. I think Verbier is start July and Morzine is mid June from what I remember.

Oh forgot, one other neg about Verbier, ****in' flys, everywhere, millions of the ****ers. Sitting down having food or beers, spending the whole time swatting them away.

If I were in your position, I'd stay based in Verbier but have a couple of days over in Pila-Aosta and a day or two in Chatel - which is much closer than Morzine and you'll probably prefer the bike park there.

You could park there and get the lifts/pedal across to Morzine.

Can I come with you actually?

@chakaping of course you can 🙂
Cool, so then it's not worth getting the season pass in Verbier, it pays off by riding 5 days but if we do 2-3 day trips, and accounting for some rest days, I don't think we'll get 5 full days in verbier (although now that I think of it we can use the pass to go for a walk on rest days).

@boobs thanks for the tip, would that be for a guide to show us the marked routes or for some off piste?

We have done both on numerous occasions as a family but we all ride. Verbier has always been our go back to choice.
Get the trail map from the lift station and there will be enough to keep you busy in and around Verbier. The map is easy to follow and the trails easy to find. If you need to go further afield or van assist then it may be worth using a guide.

A trip over the Grand St Bernard pass for a day in the Pila bike park is also worth it.

For a day out with the family the mountain train from Martigny up to Chamonix for a day is very good.

Can't wait to get back out. 😎

Update: Verbier was amazing, we did some xc rides and 3 bike park days.
Unfortunately we could't do day trips as we had car issues, maybe next year :-), but we'll be going back for sure.

Before Verbier we also went to Vallnord in the Pyrenees, and I think it was even better, more trails and more variety.
