What's it like? Has the snow cleared or would a chap be struggling?

MTB will be a bit of a write-off, as will high mountain passes. There would be a big difference between the start of April and end of May.

the higher you go the more unpredictable it will be. we had (unusual) snow in early june last year.

It also depends which resort your talking about. For example I've ridden Les Gets DH from the last few weeks of May (DIY uplifts) but wouldn't of ventured up to Avoriaz as it would still have snow.
On the road I used to give Dec/Jan a miss then start riding in Feb, so April/May is fine.
