I've been to a variety of places in the alps over the years, most of the bike parks and places with natural trails. This summer I'm taking my non-riding girlfriend with me, with the aim that I'll do alittle riding and we'll mostly just enjoy driving around to different places and the scenery.
Anyone got recommendations of places you've been in any part of the alps that was of interest to a non-rider? Areas with some history, castles, things to visit etc? Don't mind travelling around alot between locations.
Was thinking of more scenic places like Zermatt, Chamonix, Maritime Alps and maybe Lake Garda.
Also I can't think of any resort I've been to that I'd want to take a novice mountain biking. Any recommendations of places in or near the alps that would compare to 'easy uk' cross country?
Thanks
If it doesnt have to be the Alps, how about the Basque country/Pyrenees ? Great riding/walking/scenery. Cities like San Sebastian and Pamplona. Lots of great villages on both sides of the border, touristy things to do like the petit-train Larun, there's spa towns along the way, etc etc.
The coastal biking would be great for a novice btw.
Austria- Hallstatt and the nearby ice caves.
I like the Aosta valley and Aosta, some fab monastery perched on a massive rock, castles, roman remains, views of the Mont Blanc/Monte Bianco massif, Aosta town centre is nice etc.
North lake Garda/Dolomites is very nice, scenery, camping by the beach, south end is completely different, but still very nice.
Grand St Bernard Pass (Italian Job fame), go over the original pass avoiding the modern tunnel, Grand Combin in Distance.
Cervina for matterhorn views
Zermatt/Saas Fee for big mountain views (Zermatt is other side of Matterhorn from Cervina).
Interlaken for Eiger NF/ Jungfrau, lovely area
