Hj,

I was considering getting a 2018 YT until I noticed that the new YT’s are still press fit BB. I had press fit on my 2011 stumpy and wasn’t too keen on it, never seemed to last long and was more fiddly to replace.

Are press fit BB’s better now? Has anyone else has the same conundrum?

Cheers

I put a wheels components one in my spectral, was fine, better still a hope.

I wouldn't let it be the deciding factor in my bike choice, that would be a tad silly.

The whole bike is better than just its BB.

In reality its not an issue, I have a Capra and a Jeffsy, both used all year round and no problems whatsoever.

Though mine lasted less than a year, hey, what did I expect from a RaceFace BB? I wouldn't say it was more fiddly to replace. Took a lot less time than a screw in. That was without the correct tools - now bought a £70 tool kit to do the job, so it'll be a breeze (in 6 months time 😆 )

Would definitely prefer not to have it, but wouldn't make it a deciding factor.

I've got them in all my bikes, doesn't bother me as it's a disposable part; saying that the last one in my FS lasted for 18 months / 2000km so I mushn't grumble and my road bike was well over 3500km when I sold it and it was like new.

Usual issues; many press fit BBs have softish plastic exterior. When pressed into the frame, if the Job isn’t lined up perfectly, it’ll happily go in slightly off plumb and then will wear out faster.  Some BBs have metal casings which prevent this.  Think how a headset pulls itself straight for example.  So, install is usually the deciding factor.

Using both the Hope PF46 (with 30mm axle) and PF41 (with 24mm axle) on bikes and seem a decent solution like the Praxis, etc.

When the crappy factory installed one wears out just replace it with a nice Hope one. I run one on my Yeti, it's been faultless for over 2000 miles an counting.

Found this, for those wanting to do that:

Using the Hope Pf 41 myself. Very good, no creaks since installed,  highly recommend. Pf BBs are a non issue using this imo.

Had pressfit on my last bike.  Don't have it on new bike and the BB lasts as long (read not long) but with pressfit replacing them is easy peasy.

It wouldn't put me off one.

I was worried about the press fit on my Jeffsy carbon

I just fitted a Hope PF41 and it's been great.

Too good a bike to miss just because of the BB! 😀

Pressfit is bullshit but it's not worth putting you off the bike you want, as others have said.

Mine is BB92 or something, I can't remember, and tbh it's been fine. Fitting and removal is just like a headset, lifespan is less than I like but tolerable. Really glad I didn't let it turn me off my kick-ass bike.

got the Hope one in a BB92 shell - great BB. Also got a Shimano one in another bike with BB92 - they're pretty good too - and pretty damned cheap.

Have had SRAM, Token and RF too - and these have all been utter garbage... but then their non press-fit BBs have never been too hot either..

So - definitely not an inherently flawed standard, just make sure you fit something decent in there.

Well my BB30 collapsed in my F29 entirely and I was left with the metal race in the BB shell and nothing to press it out with from the other side. Ended up taking the Dremel to it to cut through and managed to prise it out. Not what you want to have to do in a carbon frame.

Recent pressfit BBs I've had (PF92 I think) have been pretty long-lasting, so it's disappointing but not a deal-breaker if a bike has press fit.

However if you're looking at the new 27.5in Capra I'd suggest checking out the Radon Swoop 170 as well. External BB, full external cable routing, fantastic geometry, competitive weight, bargain price and it rides beautifully.
