So I’ve just got a set of 650b wheels for my Salsa Vaya and I’m after an all round tyre that will cope with hard pack, loose gravel and singletrack not too draggy but won’t be ridden on tarmac. So moon on a stick tyre.

Suggestions please

I like my Vittoria Terreno Mix, they are pretty good at all the types of terrain you mentioned.

Although I've bought a pair of Schwalbe G-One Bite Evolution for when the Vittoria's wear out. But these are more of a fair weather choice in comparison to the Vittoria's 😬

Another Vittoria fan here, I got away with murder on my Terreno Dry 40mm.

Mud was fun rather than terrifying and I rarely lost traction due to lack of tread (and usually only when I had strayed into bona fide MTB territory).

Rolls well, shrugs off the rocks, comes in 650x47, what's not to like 🙂

Another vote for Terreno and if you are not riding on tarmac at all then I would be in between a dry and a mix. I used Mix and they were even okay on tarmac but very good on gravel and single track.

Im a big fan of Vittoria Terreno dry in 47mm flavour. Fast and fun and cope with a surprising amount of varied terrain.

I’ve run Hutchinson Toro’s on the two Sherpas that I had a few years back and loved them, also like the look of the Vittoria Barzo. Are these overkill for a gravel bike?

Resolutes in 650b were horrible for me. They just arent wide enough for that format.

Teravail Rutlands are super smooth but maybe not the quickest.

Not tried any vittorias yet.

Donnelly xplor mso are good if you want monster cross sizes (50mm)

My favourite combo is a WTB Sendero on the front and Venture on the back - seems to work all year round off road and is even OK on tarmac.

Have had a couple of weeping issues with the WTB’s might look at the Barzo/Mezcal combo

Ive had 2 WTB Resolutes split where the tan meets the black.  May be user error!

Just got some Rutlands delivered today. The Byways weren't really cutting it in the current conditions.

Probably not Cowman. I got a refund when the bead tore away from the sidewall on a tanwall Nano in next to no time. Think WTB QC leaves a lot to be desired.

@scotroutes what terrain are you riding the Rutlands on?

Another vote for the Rutlands (from a former Resolute rider). They've been very good on a proper mix of terrain including some very claggy mud.

Spot the wheel:

Was working pretty well, even in that state.

Only criticism is that they needed slightly higher pressures than the Byways I have, otherwise they're a little bit squirmy.

All the best,

Rich

@fudge9202 I'm hoping to use them on everything until the tracks dry out again. Gravel (fine and lumpy),  tarmac connections,  farm roads, forest tracks, rocky and rooty singletrack. The Nanos really do work well on all of that so the same capability with a bit more squish would be perfect.

Probably a bit overkill, but I've got Barzo front and rear on my Bootzipper and they are a decent all round tyre I think.

It's single speed too so road speed isn't a concern for me either 🙂

Hadn’t even considered Continental, loved the black chilli versions on my trail bike. Good shout. I’ll check those out. Cheers.

I run Ventures. Fine them good all round tyres but did struggle today in the gloopy conditions.
