You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Just having a think about another guise for the sliding dropout Inbred. It's nearly always in SS mode, which is all well and good, but when I ran it 1x9 for a week or two recently I quite enjoyed the gears 😳
So what's my shopping list going to involve?
Is the gear cable ok running full length outer?
Is my Middleburn RS7 crank going to be ok? I'm guessing I'll need a larger chainring than the 32T.
Any recommendations for where to get a wheel and the associated kit from?
Is it a very heavy setup compared to 1x9?
Thanks in advance to the members of the STW bright ideas department.
Well - I just found this - all the answers!
I'd still like to know if anyone's running an Inbred with an Alfine, and how much you notice the weight. Is it as bad as having a rack on the back or much less noticeable? Pics would be nice too, if you want to show it off.
do a search based on my name and alfine. i think i tagged it inbred alfine as well, so a google should bring it up previous posts too maybe? i have one. i rate it. your crankset will be at least as good as it ever was. come back if you have anymore questions.
thanks Del - I think I'd been searching in too short a period of time on the forum. Are you still pleased with yours and where did you source it from? You said you had a bit of 'assistance' putting it together, but was it reall tricky or not so bad? 😕
really not that bad at all. sure i could have followed the instructions, but my mate came round, we were looking at something else, and he said 'oh, have you got alfie together yet?', and at that point i took the bike down and we stuck it together in about 20 mins. i'd already built the wheel up myself. FWIW i used a mavic xm719 and 255mm spokes. got my stuff from on-one. i'll try and take some pics in a day or too if you'd like, though there is a fair lump of sheep 5hit on it at the mo 🙂
i still haven't put all that many miles on it, probably 60 or so, but it has quietened down now, and freewheels a lot more freely than when new. it's a great bit of kit.
only thing is i've got used to a less noodly fork than i have on that bike now, and i'm a bit tempted to fit all that stuff to a frame that can take a maxle fork...
Did you get the hub from On One as well? I've found stuff at CRC, CycleCentre and Just Riding Along, but would entertain a 2nd hand one - can feel a Classified's post coming on soon...
Pics would be great thanks - I'm very tempted by it having had an evening to stew on it! What front hub did you put with it? I'm thinking EN321 rims, and maybe a Pro II up front. Then again, there's a few XC Pro front wheels knocking around that would do the trick too, I should think.
Thanks for all the help so far - very interesting and much appreciated. Cheers.

I've a 456EBB I've alfine'd.
It weighs an ounce under 32lb with the following set up.
Pace RC41F
XM819 rims with DT revolution spokes, Halo UST Choir master 2.35's and about 100ml latex mix in each wheel. Front hub is a CK jobbie.
Avid BB7's 203mm front and rear with speedial 7 levers.
Cane Creek S2 headset with a headlock.
Goliath stem with On-one bars, some lock on grips.
Planet X seatpost with inbred saddle
LX HT1 crank with XT BB fitted to a carver EBB with Ti bolt. Shimano 530's? the plastic caged version. 20T ring at the back and E13 32T at the front, on-one bashguard 'cos it matched. KMC rust free 9spd SS cheapo chain.
Most of the parts were sourced from my normal inbred (now hung on the wall), except the UST stuff, the fork (from another bike so used to it) and obviously the alfine stuff.
The alfine has been faultless in the 6 months I have had it. I've brushed excess mud off 3x I think now (I live in ireland, it's muddy) and once it was slipping out of 4/5th but thats when the EBB had let go and the chain was slack as owt. The gearing is a little low for the road, but range is around 2-3 granny to top middle of a normal set up, fine for carting me all over the gaff. The ability to change gear without pedalling has been helpful a few times and it's deadly silent when zipping over stuff.
It's a little slower as I tend to sit in a gear, the gear steps are not equal and occasionally it can be hard to find the right candence for the hill.
hope that helps.
Haven't noticed it being heavy in anyway, planted on the trails (but that could be to do with the UST).
Saccades - that looks great, and thanks for the links to the other threads too. 32/20 looks like a good way to go for the hillier parts of the country, even if you're spinning out a bit at the other end of the scale.
