The dropouts are 120mm. A alfine is 135mm. Will it fit in?

That might be pushing it a little! 🙂

Sturmey Archer do some 120mm OLN 3-speeds, and they may even do a 5-speed. SJS is a good place to look...

You'd need the mk1 pompino or a pompetamine frame really.

Nexus 8 (basically same as Alfine inside) is 132 OLD, can shave 5mm, maybe more off the NDS with a spacer removal/swap, and it won't be an issue since you're not using discs, spreading 120mm to 125-127mm is doable.

might be able to do same with Alfine I've not got mine in front of me to look at the axle right now...

The Sturmey 5 speed is a good shout too, but be wary of the 8sp one, it's built for tiny wheels and the direct drive is right at one end of the range IIRC

I've got a friend who did it (DIY cold setting job), but he didn't find it easy, and he rather lost faith in the project after a while, probably not helped by the reputation Pompinos got (in the bike polo community at least) for cracking at the chainstay.

I've got a large pompetamine frame I'll be parting with shortly...

I wedged an Alfine 8 in and cycled to Budapest on mine. That was 6 years ago. Regularly swap back and forth between flip flop and Alfine 8.
It's retired to pub duties now, but no issues.

Thanks for the info. I have the alfine 8 already. The frame is for the Mrs so needs to be small but Thanks for the offer JPR. I'm half tempted to just get one and have a go. On a flip side the surly lht looks good but would need a tensioner and is more cash. Any recommendations on alternative frames greatly received.

Err - that's how they came from On-one, maybe it's the angle of the shot? Rode great.
