Im considering getting a 29+ wheelset built up on rabbit hole rims to give me a krampug option for longer rides, however my current fat rubber is running on alfine 8 so looking for a used alfine hub. Seen one for £70 but its the 501 version and i currently have the 701 version fitted.

Will a straight swap of wheels still work without any other parts being changed?

Cheers

I don't know for sure, but I suspect the shifter action is different direction.

I would hesitantly agree with epicyclo's hesitant suspicions. In my experience, the 500 series stuff is low normal and the 700 / 7000 is high normal. I've read that the shifter will just about work* but obviously the indicator will work 'backwards' and some gear steps apparently may not quite align perfectly but you will need a different "small parts kit" as the cable feeds into the hub in the opposite direction and the lever arm position is different.

*I do have both a 501 and a 7001 but have never tried them to see if the 500 series shifter does work ok on the 7000 series and visa versa.

I just replaced my 500 with a 7000. I can confirm you need a different cassette (small parts kit) but the shifter works fine. The gears shift now in the correct direction.
