Following on from my post about which chain to use (thanks for your replies) I am now sourcing the chainring. The few retailers who have them in stock are asking £59.99. For a chain ring. I wouldn't mind if it was a Campag one or Dura Ace, but it isn't.

Why is it so expensive? Is it stainless steel maybe? Gold-plated? Ti?

Why do you need an Alfine chainring? I use a standard 9-speed Deore steel chainring with my Alfine 8...think it was about £12.

Got one of these as well which I'll probably fit when the deore ring wears out...

As above, use any normal chainring, as long as it isn't a singlespeed 1/8th width.

I just removed the inner and outer rings, and kept the middle ring.

Because I couldn't find any rings which were 45 T - I'll have another look online

On One are selling the Alfine cranks with chainring for £59... A whole lot better value than the chainring on its own!

Presumably this is for a road/commuter bike if you need a 45T for it?

Yes, my Scott Sub 10, it's a commuter bike. It would go against everything I believe in to buy a whole chainset when I only need the ring.

OK check your BCD and get on to Spa Cycles, Harrogate they do plenty of 45T chain rings and they are very helpful to boot.

Buy whatever's cheapest, then sell whatever you've got left on the classifieds or on eBay surely? I believe in common sense and saving money myself, seems to have worked out so far!

Or get a Goldtec chainring for £35: http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/items.asp?CategoryID=32&Name=Goldtec+1%2F8th+Track+and+Single+Speed+Chainrings

Or a Surly chainring (44T) for £40 - it is steel so should last ages.: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/surly-stainless-steel-38t-to-44t-chainring/

You may be able to fit an outer 44 or 46t ring to the middle ring position on a triple crankset. (not that it looks very pretty)
